OK with normal 95 RON at 94.9p and V-Power at over a quid a litre it's back to the "let's see what difference it makes" exercise.

This time I filled up an empty tank with regular Shell Unleaded. The car feels exactly the same as on V-Power, the onboard computer doesn't seem to show a sudden nose dive in MPG/distance to empty.

Now when I tried Sainsbury's Super a while back the car ran like a dog and the MPG showed it was less economical.

Can a car "like" a certain brand of petrol as much as it can higher octane?

As a side note the MPG now seems to have stabilized around a month after a long trip I made. I'd found that for the next few fill-up-to brim's that I did after the trip I was getting increased MPG whilst doing my usual weekly routine - best guess at the time was the ECU had changed "map" so I guess it's now changed back!

I am sure it can, mine hates BP Ultimate (rough / lumpy) but loves V-Power. My friends same car is the opposit

I've just filled up with v-power and the car feels a bit nippier, more responsive...

its worth mentioning, if you switch from 95 RON to super, you should really reset the ECU (disconnect the battery for 5 minutes) if you want an accurate representation straight away, as after running 95 the ECU will still be retarding the timing until it works out the RON has gone up (can take a couple of tanks).

Dont mean to hijack the thread, but which is the fuel of choice out of V-max (never tried) or BP Ultimate (currently used) for a 996 TT?

Another thread hi jack i'm afraid!

I've heard that the 911SC was made to run on 91 RON fuel, if so where can you get this from? Would it be better with 95 or 97 RON fuel though?

Well a couple of days in and I'm pretty sure there is no noticeable difference in performance, which admittedly may be more indicative of our main roads than it is any petrol difference but it's still an improvement over the Sainsbury's Super (which is apparently BP Ultimate).

I guess the test will be checking the MPG properly at the next fill-up but at the moment so long as the MPG means it's more cost effective I think I shall be sticking with the Shell regular unleaded.

turbo engines love as high octane as possible. vpower is higher. after playing for a few years with maps and fuels on impreza and tt s4, now refuse to use texaco and esso 'super', bp ultimate ok, tesco99 & vp good. i use vpower and add octane booster for track

As a quick follow-up, 27.9mpg off the last tank of Shell regular 95 RON.

That's more than I typically get off the V-Power and I arguably did a little more stop/start/town driving than I usually would last week.

I thought it took time for the engine management systems to 'recognise' new fuel - sometimes a couple of tank fills - unless the ecu is re-booted (ie disconnecting and re-connecting the battery)?

Depends on the cars ECU I suspect, a guy in the Porsche service dept suggested that you would need to do at least 2-3 tank loads before you see any improvement, if using higher octane fuel.

Have to admit, been filling mine with V Power, however the other day filled with RON 95 @ Sainburys, feels a little flat.. maybe it's physcological...

Got low on the M25 earlier this week and had to put in some BP ultimate (normally use V-power) at South Mimms services. It was 106.9p per litre !!! I only put in 5 quids worth and filled up again at Fleet services (shell) for about 101p on the M3. Rip off or what ?

I have been out of UK for a nearly two months and the price of petrol seems to have shot-up again. Filled the GT2 tank and my local Esso are charging 105.9p / litre for Supreme 97 octane. Think it was 94p before and now the regular stuff seems to be 97p.p.l. even at the supermarket.
OK, I know it's been a bank holiday and the Pirates in Cornwall like to stiff the emmetts during their annual outing to the sun and July crude is trading at $70 per barrel. BUT!
By the way, does anybody use PetrolPrice.com to get a feel for local prices?
This is important because Mrs. Hog collects her new Cayenne Turbo this week!

On both, my old Boxster S as with the 997S I find that V-power (vs. standard 95 RON) makes the engine much more responsive and adds a bit of aggressiveness to the exhaust note. The effect to me is worth the extra money, although the sports chrono button has has a much bigger effect...wink
