Hello everyone! This is my first post here, although I have been following the discussion for some time. I am based in Holland and drive a 1986 3.2 cabriolet. I use the car as my daily transport as well as for track days (Zandvoort, the Ring). I got the Dutch racing license this year and would like to get into club racing next year. After three years of happy ownership, I decided to replace my 3.2 with a GT3 MkI. I found a 1999 GT3 for 63,000 Euros at a Porsche dealer. The car seems to be what I am looking for, but there are two things that concern me and I would like to ask for your views on them.

First, the car has done 82,000 km. It comes with a 1 year Porsche warranty and will get the 80,000 km service prior to delivery. It has service stamps at roughly 20,000 km intervals (all from Porsche dealers).

Second, one of the front wings has been resprayed at some point. The dealer told me this and although the paint seems a perfect match and of high quality, the clear coat is flaking where the wing meets the frame under the bonnet.

Although neither the mileage nor the respray troubles me, I am worried that it will make the car more difficult to sell a few years on. To be fair the price reflects the mileage (a very similar car with half the km sold here recently for 9,000 Euros more).

Should I buy or wait until more cars come on the market (in the fall)? This is now the only MkI for sale at a Dutch OPC.

Many thanks,

Brno

The mileage isn't a concern on these cars - assuming adequate servicing / fluid changes have been carried out they're as strong as anything.

If you're happy with the car then buy it - don't get caught up worrying about who'll buy it later or if it will depreciate. If the car is right then just buy it and enjoy it.

82,000 Km is nothing for a GT3.

As for whether it will be difficult to sell come resale time with that many Kms on, I wouldn't worry, the early cars are now 8 years old, 10,000 Kms a year is nothing.

I'd be a bit concerned about the clear coat peeling as it would tend to indicate a less than perfect job by those who repaired the car originally.

If you've found a car within the OPC network it SHOULD be a good one. They very rarely appear in the OPC network over here in the UK.

If you're serious about purchasing, get the dealer to carry out rectification to the clear coat as part of the deal.

Good luck, they're an awesome car.

Why the link?...He has a 1999 car for £47k on there...or am I missing something?

....there's a very nice low miles lhd car on PH for £3k less than the sort of money as you're looking at - lower miles, later car, MK2 brakes, all in all a seemingly better car,no VAT issues for you and have it inspected by an OPC over here and you'll drive back with a nice example

Again, thank you for the advice. Unfortunately, the Dutch tax on imported cars makes it impractical to consider GT3s on the market in the UK or Germany. It would take quite a big difference in price to make up for the import duty. (There is also the issue of the Dutch Porsche dealer warranty that is given on cars sold by them but not on cars from outside their system.)

I am going to drive the car this afternoon and will let you know how it goes.

All the best,

Does Dutch import tax apply if VAT was paid on the car at the time of purchase?...surely such import tax contravenes the whole ethos of the EEA?

rubystone...indeed, it's against the EU regulations...and they fine Holland for this import tax, but the fine is a lot less than the extra income of that tax...so, the problem remains.

In Belgium we suffer a similar extra tax...nothing we can do about it.

Good luck with the GT3 MkI search...they're awesome cars!!!
