How hard can I push my 996???
Discussion
JUST MOVED OVER TO PORSCHE OWNERSHP (996 3.4) AND ALTHOUGH LOVING EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, HAVE THIS NAGGING DOUBT ABOUT WHETHER THE ENGINE IS AS BULLET PROOF AS THE TOYOTA VVT UNIT IN MY PREVIOUS EXIGE (WHICH I USED TO DO REHULAR TRACK DAYS AND GENERALLY ABUSE SENSELESS). DO I NEED TO BE GENTLE WITH THE NEW CAR, OR WILL IT RED LINE ALL DAY WITHOUT ANY ISSUES? (IT'S HAD A REPLACEMENT ENGINE DUE TO THE TOTAL FAILURE THING ON 3.4'S, WHICH IS APPARENTLY A 2001 3.4, AND MORE RELIABLE THAN THE OLDER UNITS).
FOR INSTANCE, IF I UPRATE THE BRAKES, WOULD ANYONE ADVISE TAKING IT ON A TRACK DAY? (THINKING I MIGHT HAVE TO BUY AN OLD CATERHAM...). DOES ANYONE TRACK DAY THEIR STANDARD 996?

Welcome James, there's no need to shout (try using this !)

The 996 engine won't need to be revved mercilessly like your Toyota engine did, this purely 'cos it's got way more torque.
If maintained correctly and it is covered by an OPC warranty (a worthwhile investment) it'll be happy to be used on track as often as you like.
Good luck

P.S If you want some uprated pads for the front of the car, I've got a set of Pagid RS29s which will improve the fade resistance on track considerably.

£1000 per year seems a little harsh.
yup - but have you checked out the cost of replacing the motor if it goes pop?statistically, very unlikely - but not summat I wanted to entertain, so plumped for the warranty.
that or stick a few hundred quid on some long odds bets.... and keep the winnings as a fighting fund for unlikely but costly repairs...
just as likely/unlikely as another complete failure.
maybe
plus, the warranty also covers many other non-consumables as well....

The massively overriding opinion on here seems to be to go for the warranty - I guess with the car being 8 years old I've got 2 years where I may as well bite the bullet and make use of it- if for nothing else than piece of mind. One question - if the engine goes pop after thrashing the life out of it on a track, is it still covered - surely there's a limit here as to how much abuse they'll accept and still cough up (guessing that it's all recorded on some kind of black box thing).

As long as it's not overheated due to lack of coolant , the oil's within the min and max marks ,and (most importantly) , the diagnostic reader at the opc doesn't show that you've overreved the engine i.e. down shifted into second instead of fourth and put the rev needle out thru the gauge .I think
