996 Engine Temperature Parameters .. Techie Questions!
Discussion
I'm noticing in the hotter weather , if I'm stuck in traffic for more than say 20 mins , the water temp gauge ends up half way between the 80 and 100 marks .. Is this normal? ... It soon reduces again to 80 once on the move again.
I do notice the rad fans kicking in (yes they both work..) once the temp hits higher than 90 , but they cut out again by 85 degrees , so the temp shoots back up to 90 fairly quickly.
Any techies about to allay my fears ?
... And while I'm posting ... what's the purpose of the rear fan in the spoiler , and when does that kick in?

That temperature range is fine and no harm will come. You could lower it by clearing the radiators or between the radiators (the radiator you can see behind the bumper is the air-con rad, the engine cooling rad is sandwiched behind that - debris gets in between them and can cause higher temperatures).
Thanks for the replies folks .. That makes me feel a whole lot better.
Still some questions in my head though ...
As far as I'm aware , there's a hi and low speed on the fans , anybody got definitive answer on when these different speeds kick in , presuming it's temperature related?
Also that verdammt fan at the back ... Is it on all the time?
And is its function engine cooling or ancillary cooling?

Hello
1st off the engine fan in the spoiler housing should come on when the engine is hot it assists in cooling it down,it will come on if its really hot and the car has been switched off it will run for approx 10 mins to cool the engine bay down...it should how ever not be on all the time..
There will be a engine compartment sensor on the right hand side positioned on top of the inlet manifold that will more than likely be the cause of it being on all the time......
I am assuming it just kicks in when cold ? if so it needs that temp sender unit.
2nd The fans have 2 stages 1/2 speed and full they are fairly prone for the resistor pack failing so that it only runs on full speed....just start it from cold and let it idle and wait for the cooling fans to come in on 1/2 speed approx 70-75 degrees C .....then wait further and it should increase in speed to full....if you are technically minded or have access to a porsche tester then you can test the relays and actuate the fan on different speeds.
Hope this helps

You will know when the full front fans come on. Its like a tornado and dust swirls everywhere.!!
And remember not to let small children walk around the front of the car when the fans are on full... Or TTTTTTHHHHHUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKK!! They get sucked straight in...
I've carelessly lost two like that now. Awfully messy business....
