Thinking the other night what would be wrong with the idea of getting an early c2 996 and fitting KW or similar suspension and track tyres as a cheap and possibly highly effective track day tool?

Not that I am planning to do this but it seems to me that 90% of pork seen on track is either 20 yrs old front engined, air cooled or brand new stuff.

Wouldn't a boxster S be cheaper and more fun?

Or a 944 Turbo even cheaper and even more fun?

Not to mention, a damn sight faster around a track.

As a pure track car the 996 doesn`t have a dry sump engine (the GT3 does) and that may be a problem. When the first ones were converted and raced in the Porsche cup they did suffer oil surge issues.

There is an oil-pump upgrade for the semi-dry sumped 996 cars to prevent this measure...infact I think you need it if run slicks, as this inevitably increases cornering G-Forces and subsequent oil pressure surge.scavenge issues but I am sure if Porsche could not prevent it when converted for Cup races, a little oil-pump probably is not going to help.

For track-day use I am sure they are fine... I have never encountered any issues with any of my semi-dry sump 996's when using them for trackdays - I know it is hardly competition....

jonathon palmer experience days use "jp3's", among others, which are gt3 look-a-like stripped and caged c2 tips. much better than i was expecting and must be pretty durable given the abuse they get in so many different hands
