Guys,

I have a 2006 2S with 7,000 miles. I love it but it lacks some real grunt. My Evo FQ300 can give more thrills at times. I have had a deposit on a new 997 Turbo since last Oct. and I need to commit more than the £3k deposit soon. I really don't want to fork out another £50k plus my lovely black 2S just for a bit more poke.

DMS has offered me the following:-

Thanks for the enquiry. We take the 997S from 355 BHP and 295 lb/ft to 379 BHP and 319 lb/ft. Cost £850+vat. The upgrade is undetectable by Porsche service and diagnostic equipment and can be carried out at your location.

Can anyone give me other simple ways of improving the performance (without ruining the warranty) so I can tell my dealer to stick his Turbo where the sun doesn't shine?

My garage is tight enough and I don't really want the extra wide rear (40mm) either!

Please advise!

Nick

DMS option sounds good and at that price is surely a bargain - i know that some other guys on the forum have used DMS (KayC) and were happy with it - Autocar recently had an article on DMS.

P.S. I would have thought a standard C2 would give an Evo a thrashing? Maybe the Evo was easier it drive as i cannot see where the 300bhp EVo would have an advantage over the C2 never mind the C2S.

IMO it doesn't make financial sense to try and tune a modern normally aspirated 911.

996 and 997 carreras are already in a high state of tune and Porsche didn't leave the 'room to play' as they did with the 3.6 air cooled engine.

You could spend £500-£3000 on ECU, exhust etc but you're never gonna really 'feel' extra grunt when driving... I think the best you could hope for is to optimise for the good fuel we have here and maybe a slightly better mid range.

These engines are so finely tuned now to make any real-world, all scenario, proper extra grunt would be very expensive and definately invalidate the warranty. Look how much Porsche charges for X51 - the engine really needs all the parts of the kit to make more real power.

Sorry if I sound pesimistic but it is from experience.

You may not want to here this but possibly your best bet is to move to a 996 or 997TT ?

Edit: Sorry Nick just seen your 997tt comment - so perhaps that isn't an option after all.

if you want to preserve the warranty go for the OEM X51 power pack

costs £6k+ to retrofit though althoug this includes the PSE

I want to see dyno printouts before and after because I struggle to see how £900 worth of generic code give exra HP you can feel. No disrespect intended to any companies mentioned.. just want to overcome my natural skepticism.
I always thought more fuel is WASTED unless you have more air coming in.

By all accounts this is a worthy upgrade, it might be worth hunting down a 997 with this fitted at an OPC so you can have a go and see if it is worth the extra £6k.

Good Luck with the hunt.

You won't get the characteristic mid-range surge that a turbo engine delivers from a normally aspirated engine.

For example, the 997TT and the 997GT3 have similar performance, but the TT delivers a whallop that is all over by 5,000 rpm, whereas the GT3 spins more evenly up to 8,000 rpm. Some people prefer turbos, others prefer normally aspirated.

I'm sure Mitsubishis and Subarus are the same, giving a slightly deceptive impression of performance.

The X51 power kit might be worth considering, but personally I'd prefer to stretch to a GT3.

Just a thought - have you got PSE?

A better sound will increase the perceived power very nicely!

You say your Mitsi can give more thrills - that's probably because of the way the power is delivered rather than outright abilities? Maybe the 997 is too good.

I'm not doubting your abilities, but they reckon that £1k spent on driver training will make you much faster than £3k spent on performance upgrades.

Just a thought!!

Forget Turbocharging rolleyes and go the Supercharging route wink, with the current exchange rate against the dollar, this works out at fantastic value per hp... 513Bhp & 415lb/ft torque. biggrin

You'd need to factor how this would reduce the value of the car at resale time? or how much it would cost to put it back to standard if possible.

Other than the obvious labour costs, this is a bolt on unit/modification. Simply return to standard come trade-in time and i'm sure as 997's become more affordable and available to more enthusiasts, the unit would be fairly easy to move on. wink

Aye - good point. There's obviously a market for it in the US, and you know everything comes over here at some point.
