Surely Porsche would just change the whole engine. I believe this was the solution, in the US, for multiple RMS failures (caused by misalignment).

New crankcases should be stamped with the original engine number.

That's what I was hoping for. It's had around 4 RMS replacements in the past 14 months. Possibly 8 since registration (March 2002)
Apparently it's going to take a couple of weeks to arrive from Deutschland. I'm still not convinced though that this will do the trick. Could it be that the crankshaft is not quite 'right'? If it leaks even one drop of oil after the new crank case, then it'll be STRAIGHT back to the OPC.

Hi sounds crazy to me . As been said allready should replace engine as in USA.
The trouble is the cases are 4k plus and time you swap them over the labour ,£100 an hour, would be huge. The other thing is if the crank housing is not in line when they assemble it the seal will allways leak. Why not give Baz at Hartecs a ring and get his advice.

Thank heavens I have the extended OPC Warranty, or I would be scared. I actually had my fingers crossed for a new unit, but the OPC have told me they have diagnosed it as a crank case fault.
Just wondered if anyone else had had this fault.

It's an 02 Carrera with less than 42K on the clock. I've had it since June last year and it's had 3 RMS since I've had it. ALL done under warranty. Just wondering if the new crank case will solve the issue or will it just show that the cranshaft is badly machined. Either way, it's going to be covered by warranty. Have many people in the UK had this happen and gotten new engines? I would have thought that Porsche would wait until they go bang before replacing, and sit tight and hope that the bang never happens.......???

Hello

This is unfortunate but is the answer a new set of crank cases are approx £2.5K the engines for these cars are in short supply so the factory are not replacing units(so they told us when i worked at opc)
So this is how it should be...new crank case new pistons new rings....but using old crank shaft and ladder unless it wont fit new style crank cases in that case you will get new ladder too!

The problem with yours will be that the crankshaft will be out of line to the crank case halves...
when doing a rear main oil seal change you remove the seal and fit a dummy mandrel over the end of the crank shaft if it goes over and into the crank case its ok..if it doesent then you need crank case halves...which i presume is what they did at an opc.

They do these engines quite regular so im sure your engine will be better for this...i have done 6 in 3 1/2 years..

I would of prefered a new engine but hey.....better than 1 that leaks oil.

Mike, will this mena that the 'old' crankshaft will never really mate properly with the new crank case and seal?
Will they HAVE to put new pistons and rings in?

So you think that this will make the engine a better unit?
WIll I have to 'run it in' (please excuse my ignorance!).

Do you think it will negatively affect the value of my car?

It's a hsame that Porsche haven't seen fit to replace the engine (but if they have very frew, then maybe that's why), but surely, if they don't think this will cure it, are they just buying a bit of time?
I guess there's no way I will ever run a 996 without a warranty (or any 911 for that matter.....).

Stu

Did they just replace your crank case or did they replace anything else as well?
Was it a crack that caused the replacement or was it RMS induced?

They think that someone had pulled the alternator out before, and in doing so, damaged slightly the crank case. Over time, it got worse and one day it cracked, apparently causing coolant to hit the alternator and my battery to die

So the only symptoms were that the battery died. On closer inspection they realised why.

Best of my knowledge, they 'simply' replaced the case, nothing else

Yes, My 996 4S had to have same, previously RMS but new crank housing and total engine rebuild, I was 6 months out of warrenty with extended warrenty in place. Not even an issue, car returned 3 weeks later and, up to part ex'ing 18 months later no more problems. I also asked about new engine but no, did ask cost and told in the region of £7k+, good luck

Just got car back witha shiny new crank case and engine rebuild. Form start to finish it's taken 8 days.

Sutton Coldfield OPC : thumbup: - I can't fault these guys.

The whole operation there is a breeze to deal with.

Do you think the new engines are in short supply becasue there has been so much demand for replacements? This situation is barmy and to be honest I would not want some OPC grease monkey thats paid a bonus to complete a job more quickly to be rebuilding the engine on my car.
