I think I’ve found my dream Porsche
Discussion
Well that’d be a Ferrari in reality but in any case. Some of you may remember I’ve been posting lots of newbie/simpleton questions about 968’s lately (clubsport/domster et al – thanks for the pointers). Anyway I went to see another 968 CS today - the second I’ve looked at (the other was at 911virgin – I’m starting to join the consensus here). I live in Brussels and this one is 20 miles up the road from me so that’s a good start (I want an LHD) – I had visions of several expensive trips back to the UK to find the car I wanted. Anyway I’d appreciate your comment’s on the below because I’ve effectively committed to lay out some cash on what I’ve seen so far.
So I get to see this car and it’s spotless – and I mean spotless. The interior is perfect. It’s an original CS spec (no rear bench and no electrics) but with comfort seats and air con as the only options. Neither of which I mind because I will need to do some long drives to Southern Europe in it. It’s a 93 car with 118 kms on it. The body is good for the year except for a couple of “parking” scratches, small areas (less than 50mm) of flaking lacquer on the two front wheel rims where it’s obviously been kerbed once in it’s life and a chip in the right front fog lamp. I can get the paint and the alloys sorted easily by a mate who owns a body shop.
It’s black with silver alloys, which is the exact colour scheme I was after. Sorry to offend other 968 CS owners on the forum but the red/blue/white/yellow cars with colour coded wheels and seat backs look absolutely hideous to me so this is the best colour scheme IMHO. Still, I understand this is a personal thing.
As far as mechanicals are concerned it has been serviced at the same Porsche main dealer (Porsche Centre Brussels) for the last 10 years (all stamps in the service book) and they are also the same dealer that supplied the car new. I will be speaking to them about the history of the car shortly. It’s had two owners. It’s a Belgium spec car that is still in Belgium and obviously with me being here that’s where it’ll stay. I got a chance to drive the car for some miles on the motorway and all seemed fine although I didn’t get a chance to chuck it round the bends at all. The gearbox seemed quite tight and nothcy which I quite liked and gave a precise feel to the car – is this correct? There was quite a lot of travel in the clutch so I assume that will need replacing soon – is this an expensive job? The tyres have been replaced and wheels balanced recently and the timing chain was replaced 10K miles ago.
Now here’s the catch. The only slight worry I have is that Porsche hasn’t serviced the car since Jan 2002. The owner is a car/bike enthusiast who works as a mechanic for the Repsol Honda superbike team (based in Belgium) so I assume he knows his s**t when it comes to sorting mechanical things out because I don’t. He assures me that since the last service the only thing’s that required doing were oil and filter changes and a strip down of the brake callipers which he has done because he gets all the oil, lubricants and fluids free of charge through work via Reposl Honda’s sponsorship deal with Shell. The guy seemed to know what he was talking about and at the end of the day this is a 10 year old car that appears to be exactly what I’m looking for so should I be that fussy?
Anyway there’s lot’s more that I could ramble on about with this car but I’ve got a deal on what I consider a very good price subject to me checking the car out and I just wondered what you all thought of the above.
Thanks
Gary

There's no better peace of mind than an independent inspection. If he has nothing to hide the seller won't object. Porsche Centre or independent should do it for you at reasonably short notice and not too much cost - Especially if you tell them you'll be using them when you find a car.
Good luck.
Good luck.
i thought it was my car you were describing right down to the crack in the right hand spot lamp...until i read the colour
As stated get it inspected,,or alterntively if you can get it at a price that will cover any remedial work,,definitely chat with the Porker dealer,,it is probably better that some work other than serviving has already been done on the car.

I know that;
C16 = version for uk
C24 = version for greece
So on an educated guess
C22 = version for belgium ????
The rest are true not guesses
197 = higher amp battery
381 = comfort series seat left
382 = " " " right
451 = prepared for radio (as in speakers/wiring)
573 = air conditioning
