The aircon doesn't seem to be very efficient at the moment and I took the car to get the aircon re-gassed. The man looked in his little book to see how much of what to put in and the only Porsche with blanks against the name was 996 and Boxster.

Does anyone know of the correct amount of Refridgerant for the Aircon system?

996 3.4 1999 by the way.

Check the seals first. No point in pumping refrigerant into a leaking system.

Had mine done on Saturday morning, guy even had a chart on his wall for it... but I can't remember the figure I'm afraid!

Try calling these guys and see if you can wangle it out of them: http://www.car-aircon.co.uk/

By the way, would recommend them to anyone in London, vaccum test and refill for £58.

Ask Mike at www.sportsandclassic.com who posts on here, will know.

Whoever's doing the job should first set the machine to "suck" to a) recover any gas that is in the system and b) to ensure there's a good vacuum built up (which in itself helps check that the seals are OK) to suck in the measured amount (once you know what this amount is!) of gas and tracer dye, if used (this is fluorescent and used to locate system leaks). If a leak is found, they will just recover the gas used by sucking it out again, so they can repair the leak and then re-gas it.

Hope that helps.

I had the re-gassing done on Sat. The garage said that it took a while to vaccum out but that it held the vaccum. They said that it took longer than expected also to re-gas.
Well to cut a long story short, it was nice and cold when they handed it back to me but today it didn't seem to be putting out cold air again.

What could possibly be wrong now?

Probably a stoopid question but is the little snowflake icon illuminated?

P.S. My dad took his BMW to the dealer with "faulty a/c" but the fault was that he didn't realise that he had to press the button to switch the compressor on!

Yes the Aircon Snowflake is on and when it is selected on the engine revs go up when idling, therefore the compressor is working but the refridgerant or mixer unit must be shot. Any ideas?

Hello

If the people who regassed it are a proper outfit they would of put tracer dye in the system to identify leaks in the future...you use a black light and it glows bright yellow on colour where the dye has leaked out....

In my experience the front A/C condensor units are prone for weeping and once i had a A/C pipe corroded underneath the car.....other than that its down to good old diagnosis.

Mike

PS if in cheshire area and can spare some time ill take a look FOC.

The saga continues. I noticed this morning that when the compressor (little snoflake) is off then the radio reception is miles better. Does the compressor whirr near the FM aerial? I'm sure it didn't do this before I had it re-gassed. I should have just waited for the service in a couple of weeks but wanted cold air for Le Mans!!!

My aircon stopped working due to the radio being replaced with a different unit, which buggered something in the central communication unit. Only the designer of that system will ever understand how that could interfere with the aircon, but there you go. I guess the same could happen if the standard radio has developed a fault?
