This has got to be a scam. Hasn't it? I sold mine to the trade for (a lot) more than this, this month and it had more miles and less spec!

Got to be.

Car's located in London and with a Manchester phone number, it doesn't inspire confidence

Not to mention the price.

How do these scams work? Are they after your email address and if so for what? They can't expect someone to pay a deposit without seeing the car can they?

The number gives an international ring tone and is answered by an American-voiced voicemail.

I declined to leave a message............

by dialing the number there is a fair chance you will have incurred a larger phone bill than expected

I dialled the geographic local number (0161, which is a local call from my STD) that was in the ad. On my BT tariff (Option 3) I don't get charged for ANY calls to geographic numbers (01, 02 and I think there's now 03 too).

If for some reason there are exceptions to this tariff then BT are outside their terms & conditions, in whch case I may need your help suing them..............

That is obviously absolutely ridiculous. If you are in the market for an almost identical 360 Spider, however, please let me knowwink. Mine is of course real, can be test driven and most certainly will be handed over once paid for.............

No ... as a telecoms nerd, that is not possible. If you dial a standard geographical number you will only be charged for the normal tarrif to that number. If the caller has 'diverted' their call elsewhere then they pick up the onward call costs. The numbers you need to be aware of are international, some 'personal' numbers starting 07 and, of course the premium rate 09 numbers.

Most of these scams involve you paying an 'extra' sum of money to a shipping agent or to 'clear' some financial transaction - then it turns out there is no car after all. Same applies to car sales, helping out Nigerian businessmen stash away their millions or paying for a wife from Russia or whereever.
