I'm in need of some new tyres on my TVR Griffith 500 (boo hiss you all cry paperbag) and thought I'd ask about them here!

I've currently got Continental Sportcontacts on the rear, which are not widely (seemingly ever) fitted to TVR's, but bear with me... I've got them on my daily drive and am very impressed by them, especially in the wet, and a search on the forums seems that there is a lot of praise for them by Porsche drivers.

Now I realise that our cars are quite different in approach and design but I do like the way these tyres perform in the wet and despite my rears being barely legal they clear water far better than the Toyo T1S's fitted to the front of the car - in short I think they're great as the back end is solidly planted compared to a front end that tries to aquaplane on good tyres at 50mph!

I need to replace the rears as they are now barely legal and I've just suffered a puncture that's really finished them off. Have any of you folk previously used Conti Sportcontacts on a TVR or similar lightweight front engined, rear drive car before and what's the consensus? I'm loathed to follow the heards and buy Toyo T1R's for the rear if they behave like those on the front! For reference the current ones are original Conti Sportcontacts, I'm running Sportcontact 2's on my other car and I guess it'll be them as the 3's don't seem to be available in the right size at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any help

I'd try Yokohama AVSs for your car if you can get the sizes. I think they come in different grades, but are usually supplied (and select if given the choice) in "i" - intermediate. I've found them fantastic wet or dry, road or track and they wear quite well too. Continentals are usually too hard - they last well on the road but don't offer the same grip as others, meaning they will scrub away quickly on track - have taken various cars on track days with them (Audi RS2, 911, S3 etc) and they all ended up with chunks out of the tread edge on the nearside front - not so with P Zeros, Pilot Sports or AVSs.
