I really fancy a 996 turbo. Is the suspension a bit wallowy though? I have an elise at present which is up for sale, so was wondering what mods people do to 996 Turbo's to make them maybe a bit more GT2 like? e.g more power and firmer lowe suspension?

I have driven both, GT3 felt great, nice top end; Turbo felt very rapid, but a bit softer. I guess that I would ideally like a tuned Turbo with firmer suspension - anyone done this for reasonable money?

my budget does not stretch to a GT2, so anyone care to comment on chassis upgrades for the turbo....if it needs it to make things sharper?

Speak to Andy or Dom at Fearnsport http://www.fearnsport.co.uk/ Whilst I was there a couple of months back they were bolting a set of V3 KWs onto a 996 Turbo.

Not sure if the Turbo would benefit from rose jointed rear toe arms (they transformed my GT2) again ask Andy or Dom.

Good luck.

For a road car, the turbo is very nicely sprung. For a track car, don't buy a turbo!

Hi flatfour. I had a msc na honda conversion for 3 years used mainly for track days before getting the 996tt. my car was running the usual nitrons, stickies etc. My turbo is quicker then my old elise so unless your elise is really played with then the power will be more then enough for a time. handling wise i find the turbo a firm is not harsh ride on twisties but smooth on the motorways. unless your going to track it (and i doubt any turbo will stand up to the abuse of a track day for long in terms of pads and disks) i think your be pleasently surprised with what these cars can do. the front spoiler is also prone to be scraped so lower it and your be spending £250 on a regular basis to get it replaced. coming from a loti the only thing you really will want to do is to change the exhaust.

best of luck

the 996tt is nicely sprung.

some uprated anti roll bars would possibly be the answer for you, H&R do a set for the 996 turbo for around £500.

not sure how this would affect the warranty?

not sure if some GT2 shocks and springs would go on the turbo?

let us know what you decide to do.

If you want firmer road suspension get the Bilstein PSS9 kit has I think 9 settings for firmness, they make a huge difference to the handling day to day.
If you want to do a bit of track day stuff too go for JIC or Moton coilovers.

As for power there are a few ways you can go, I have a stage 2 GIAC ECU upgrade with Bailey upgraded Diverters, Fabspeed supersport exhaust and EVO motorsports intake and bosche plugs which will give you comfortably over 500bhp. I have an independent warranty now by the way biggrin

Well lucky for me I am now living in the US where independent warranties are what they say on the tin and plenty to choose from. in the UK I would be a lot more wary of them and make absolute sure your car is covered for everything before going ahead with one.

Just don't want to make the same mistake twice....

Had a fast scooby which I traded in for an E46 M3. After 3 Months I was so bored with the BMW that I sold it privately and bought the elise - never looked back. I found the BMW uninvolving and I never really cared if I drove it or not. Just wondering if I am really a GT3 man, but love the looks, toys and tuneability that you ge with the turbo.

Anybody else moved from an M3 (E46) or an elise to a 996Turbo? I am still in the 996Turbo/996GT3 dilemma. Just ocasional track use woiuld be planned.

I've had an E46 M3 in the past. It is incomparable to a TT in far too many ways for me to give a comparison hehe

The biggest difference (for me) apart from the speed differential... The Porker wraps itself around the driver. I didn't get the same feeling with the M3.

Perhaps my Porker's gay? copredcard

A GT3 is far more stiffly sprung than a standard Elise. I used to only have a GT3, and whilst it is tolerable as a road car, its not great as an only car. If you test drive a GT3 try to take it on some crappy roads rather than the mirror flat dual carraigeways most dealers favour. GT3 is great on track though, a turbo will be heavy and eat its brakes.

Will,

would you say that the TT is far more involving in your opinion?
As I have said, I have driven both (not back to back) and was impressed with the turbo and the GT3. Just wondering what the Turbo is like to live with for someone wo likes to feel involved in the drive.

Need something that will make me want to get up early on a Sunday morning for a drive.

The E46 only lasted me 3 Months.....

GT3 is more involved than a TT by a long way I've had both and at the time each was my only vehicle. Youcan live with a GT3 day to day for sure, but a TT is easier to live with day to day.
If you have a daily drive get a GT3 you'll love it. If you are a one car person then get the TT mod the suspension a bit, up the power to around 500bhp and it's an animal too, you just don't quite get the feedback you get in the GT3.
And on a plus side for the turbo when it's raining you won't get overtaken by bicycles biggrin
