My missus got bored of my baby Chimera walking all over her 996 Carrera 2, so she just bought the 996 turbo cabrio.

Oh. My. F*&*&*g. GOD. That is an amazing piece of engineering. Hat well and truly doffed. Jaw dropping in every way. Tardis-like ability to fold time and space and arrive at places far quicker than you thought possible.

Three bright patches in the thought of looking at that thing walk away from my Chim. 1) I'm insured on it. smile 2) Her son is trying to get a sport exhaust on it as mine sounds 'far better' smile 3) Supercharger conversion on mine is £5k. Walk away then! biggrin

See you lot out on the roads...

Not wanting to upset Don but.....a wife that goes out and gets a 996 Turbo.....I'd sleep with her (and i mean that in the nicest way possible Don!!!!).....now thats the type of wife for me you lucky so and so.
My wife loves driving the 993 but she is like driving miss daisy when it comes to speed....an five year old on an electric scooter has a heavier right foot!!!!!

Chris, I know exactly what you mean, no worries. I'm a lucky, lucky man, even before this is in the equation!

(Ignoring all obvious sexist chat) I am thinking of upgrading from 996 C2 to a 996 turbo cabrio. Is it that much better?

Ha! Neil - to be honest I was expecting not a lot of difference. But it's like comparing a bi-plane to a Tornado. Well, maybe not that much, but it made me really take stock of what engineering can do.

For example, in her C2, my TVR was all over the back of her, in corners and straights - couldn't overtake unless it was a big straight, but she was getting hacked off. Sunday, she was just driving along with two of her kids in the back, chatting away, singing along to the radio. I was at 8/10ths behind her trying to keep up.

That is the difference. If she went for it, I wouldn't see which way she went. In my Chims defence, it is the baby 4.0 (!)

As for all other comments - I'm ignoring them. She's an amazing person.

Thanks Don1. Will see what OPC will do for me on 996 and then figure out what is available. May go private but either way will take out on a test run before I buy, well, if I buy!

Don 1 , its time for a 500. The difference you make out between the Porsche's is the same as me going from a 4.0HC (even) to a 500.For instance it was spins its wheels in the hot dry weather on good tarmac when you hit the floor from say 30-40mph in second,Oh and it has new proper tyres, and there 245's not 225's. Its a different beast alltogher

Hi Rum - seen you over in the Chim area. I've only just got my 400, so upgrading is out of the question at the moment. Mine has been Nitron'd, and has big brakes etc... As for the power, I can wait for a S/C. And sit with the (hollow) victory of the exhaust noise.

But this post was all about the amazing engineering of the porker. Top stuff.

Hi Don
Must say though on the engineering side , my mate had a MK1 Boxster which was a good car.( Other close mate has great 993 S wide body , good car ) . Then bought the latest and had nothing but problems, i have been told this a few times now, and again at the weekend from a guy who had just bought a Griff 500.(Oh he also got stung twice on both Boxsters by the dealer to a point where a could have bought 2 good late Chimaeras for the money he lost.)
I was told again very recently of a certain Porsche dealer doing on average 4 engine rebuilds a week under warranty .If Porsche is going like most of the other German products then this is a bad thing. My family and i have been in the trade for the last 45 years and still have close connection with the other German bands where they are basically resting there laurels on there past achievements when it comes to quality. The average Ford or Kia is of better quality than some of the German products.
I am lucky enough to have meet a lot of wealthy people in the world of yachts ( I do boats these days not cars )and quite a lot of Germans . They say its hard to build vehicles because of serious Trade Union issues making it somewhat like Leyland , Ford U.K and Jag in the 70's.
I fact one of the German guy i know owns a certain company that is the sole suppler of the machines that make LED's . He bought the latest 911 and then sent it back and bought a old 964.Thing is most people who buy German cars buy for the quality and reliability (so they are told the marketing bods), but then its is not talked about to much as they don't want to look like they have been seen off and payed through the nose for something that is of lesser quality and twice the price of a the average Ford when it spend a lot of time parked at the dealers . Its all about image but for how long will it hold. Next time you are on a long road trip try spotting cars on recovery trucks if you don't believe me .

Yes, in truth Porsche have a very bad reputation for engineering poor quality cars. (don't let on though, it's a big secret)

Unlike that now-defunct kitcar company from Blackpool. hehe

My doris drives a Polo. It's even a GTi (although that is a bit of a far fetched moniker for such a "beast&quotwink.

I quite like it. Leather/Climate/WarmBums etc. and far more room than the Pork it lives with smile

Ukwill , the usual cheap dig at TVR , nobody said they are good quality cars, and are pointless in hand of people who just get in a drive and never look under the bonnet. The difference is that the German manufacturers do and i am afraid they are nowhere near as good as they make out . I can tell you that VW , Audi ,Seat frequent this drive regularly as our cars can change weekly ,it would be either Honda , Mazda , Suzuki and KIA.
Could you imagine VAG group offering a 7 year warranty as KIA does . Ever taken a trim of a KIA sorento and looked at the neatness if the wiring / trunking etc. Probably not . Brand marketing, some of these people are key to vehicle sales not the cars themselves.

Actually, I don't think I've ever bothered to make digs about Trevor's because frankly, I don't really need to. They've earned their reputation all by themselves hehe

I'm afraid to say that the same cannot be said of most, if not all of the German marques, who, whilst even enduring periods of below par quality control, were, and still are light years in front of anything that ever came out of the shed in Blackpool.

As for warranties, VW don't need to offer stupendously long warranties because they already have a market that a company like KIA would quite happily take dog off the menu for. You'll notice that the US get better warranties on German cars than we do. Same principle. The brand is weaker over there, the warranty duration helps sell more cars. Here, well they just don't need to.

ps. Why on earth would I have ever taken the trim off a KIA sorrento? Just. Why? wobble

I've been trying to tell my VW/Merc-loving friends this for some time. The Polo in particular has gone downhill in term of build quality & reliability - in fact, i don't actually know anyone who has a post-T reg who hasn't had problems with their car e.g. clutches that burn out after 10k, ignition packs, corroding alloy wheels. As you say, the Ford Focus does consistently better than the VW Golf, even in German car surveys.

anyway, i feel we're digressing into a Porsche vs TVR debate, so will leave it there.
