An imminent move to the suburbs means that I am forced to consider the purchase of something a little more practical for shopping and all that. The better half likes the Rav4. Am I being too petty?
Don't think so, unless you have long blond hair and a songwriting talent, get a Panda/Punto/Focus/Oh Too Petty

OK Ravi so your question really is 'what should I buy instead of the Rav?'
so what's your budget and broad requirements?
Ok so budget of about 7.5g and needs to be able to cater for carrying stuff (small furniture, dog etc) as well as being relatively cheap to run. the lady likes the 4x4 thing so other option is a freelander....so what's your budget and broad requirements?

Honda CR-V 2.0 [Sport], probably a 4yr old for that sort of money. Better mpg that the other two as it's 2WD most of the time.Edited by fido on Tuesday 5th June 13:43
My only car is 993 and very rarely need anything more practical, even in the suburbs. Most companies will deliver stuff of size. I even took an entire carpet to the dump in the pork last week by cutting it up into littler bits.
Much cheaper to just hire a van for a day on the rare occasion when you need to move anything large about.

I'm not sure if I could live with the thought of a dog mooching in the back of my 964.Much cheaper to just hire a van for a day on the rare occasion when you need to move anything large about.

so your moving to the suburbs? so what do you need a 4x4 for? even though a rav4 isnt a proper 4x4 its just for townies. get a normal car like a focus, mondeo etc wont look half as stupid driving around and they will be nicer to drive.
Modern 4x4 "All Roaders" drive as well as most shopping cars you'd care to mention...after that it depends if you love/hate the image need/don't need the extra capabilities can cope with/couldn't stand the fuel consumption. And even the fuel consumption is OK on lots of the smaller diesel ones.
Horses for courses. I wouldn't have one but I have learned there are lots people who would and mostly for reasonable reasons.
