In one hour, I'll be having a look at this 996:

http://www.autoscout24.at/Details.aspx?id=3iozyjih...
(I know it's in German, but there are fairly good pics, and some recognizable text maybe).

Any comments? Don't think it has fabulous options, but its seems extremely sorted, and is very comfortably under budget, I'm tempted.

Looks like it's been kept very well ...

Does it have 9 stamps?

How are the inside faces of the front discs?

Give it a good 30 minute drive to let everything warm up , and then drive slowly over any little ruts you can find .. Any squeaking / knocking from the drop links?

Good Luck!?

EDA
Bring a torch and check the the condensers , see if there's any damp patches on them (especially on the lower area) .. This probably means the gas has escaped and the condensers need to be replaced .. Condensers + re-gas = £1k.

Check B post door catches for rust.

Etc etc!!

You know that you can switch the Autoscout site to English. Not everything will translate, but you can get a better idea. As an alternative, you could always learn German ?

Wenn Sie deutsche Wagen kaufen wollen, ist es immer besser deutsch zu sprechen!

Sieht schon aus der Wagen.

Description says A1 condition full service history always garaged, 2000 model year.

Then below that it says "For you Tommy ze war is over"

Aber wer hat gesagt dass ich nicht Deutsch sprechen kann?? Also, haben sie das Auto gemocht? Ich habe es gerade gefahren, es war SUPER!

Sprachübersetzung/Translation:

But who said I can't speak German?? So, did you like the car? I just drove it, it was SUPER.

The car is STUFFED with toys (not that I care so much about them). Navi, PSM phone communication, CD changer (useless), full leather, electric roof, electric seats (the most useless and heavy option!), seat heating, new P Zero wheels, chrome exhaust, 18 inch rims, alot of servicing and full history at the dealership, this car has been well taken care of. The interior is like-new! Full leather is my weak spot... Never had RMS problems I think (by the look of the owner when I mentioned it), it seems to be used like a pretty normal car. No accidents (in this country they say it upfront, yep unbelievable but true), no leaks according to him, next servicing at 105,000km, beautiful paint metallic (I think), never repainted. However the clutch was never replaced, so I asked for a drastic reduction in price.

The downsides are: the most hideous steering wheel I ever saw, boring rims that will have to be changed, no sports exhaust (the guy said yes it has it eventhough it doesn't have a switch but I think it doesn't, he's going to send me the scanned options list), and frankly, the last downside, is that the car is too silent!!!! After doing one drive in a 1996 993 Carrera 4, every single car sounds boring since! (including 2 other 993's! go figure). Of course no Porsche warranty here (unheard of to renew it in this country), and the threat of an engine failure.

Otherwise my first impressions were that the steering, the clutch and the brakes are rather on the heavy side (compared to a 987). Also, first gear is blistering fast, but for second gear, i have to step on it after around 2000/3000, otherwise the car doesn't really fly. To say it all, I suspect a 280bhp 987 was actually more powerful at that range, is that even possible?

that's all
Kay

Not sure what other options it has, I wonder whether alu on the handbrake, the gear and on the doors are an option? Also not sure whether the ESP was an option back then..

wonder whether "A1" means anything specific.. The war on the German Autobhans is only starting though wink
