FAO Boxter Owners! (running costs)
Discussion
ayup.
I'm thinking about getting a new car soon. My two most likely choices at the moment are a Honda S2000 and a porsche Boxter.
I'll be looking at spending around £12,000-£13,000 so If I went for a Boxter it would probably have to be something round 1998 kinda age.
My only concern which is swaying me more towards the S2000, is the running costs of the Boxter which ive read/heard to be quite high.
Can anyone advise me on here of the running costs of a boxter of that kind of age.. it would be a manual one.. clutch replacement and general repairs very expensive? how is the reliability?
Thanks very much for any advice!

Not really an answer to your question but, at that kind of money, I'd imagine you're buying at or near the bottom of the Boxster market - an old 2.5 litre model probably.
In contrast, for £12-13K you can get an 01-02 S2000, probably including a higher mileage second generation model with the glass rear screen and the more compliant suspension. Arguably more car for your money (unless you're after the cachet of a Porsche and so badge snobbery is a buying factor) IMO.
I test drove a 2.5 Boxster before buying my first S2000 and was underwhelmed. Try both before you decide.

I'm a Boxster owner. Had two Boxster S's and they are absolutely brilliant cars.
The S2000, on the other hand, is an absolutely brilliant car.
Sure. Its not quite as brilliant as a Boxster S. There again, new, it cost £15-20K less. Its a hell of a lot of car for the money.
At your budget I would really, seriously consider the Honda.
To answer your questions.
Yes you can buy 1998 car for your budget. There's one for sale at a trader's just down the road from me at £10999....which means £10500 really then. It will be a 2.5L car.
At that age you probably won't be putting a warranty on it. That's £900 a year from Porsche but covers all the main nasty things that could go wrong. Unless other people's warranties cover the engine and gearbox...not tried an alternative myself.
Nothing that bad has gone wrong with mine but I called on the warranty during the teething period many, many times. Since its been bullet-proof.
Servicing and consumables will be a bit over a grand a year at a good specialist. If no warranty keep 2K in reserve just in case. Chances are you won't need it but...new discs and pads all round for my 'S' is around a grand. New boots all round £800 or so (top flight Michelin tyres mind.
Could be you manage to find an example that's generally good but with a tatty softtop. Replacing the roof (not the mechanicals) will cost £400 or so or you could spend £700 (or so) and have one of CarhoodWarehouse's glass rear windows.
Mine is a later model that has the glass window anyway - its a boon. My previous one had the placcy window which was a PITA as you had to do the Boxster chop (as it was known) half way through lowering the (otherwise all-)electric roof to smooth our the plastic.
Errrm. That's what I remember at the moment. Hope its useful. I've lived with a Boxster S now for six years or more. Brill. But that Honda is a good car and friends who have 'em are very happy.

Agreed for the money i would buy a S2000 (have owned both). Boxster is a better car overall just not at that price point. The S2000, on the other hand, is an absolutely brilliant car.
