Transmission malady?

Driving back from work I noticed excessive viration in 4th and then a powerful smell of overcooked rubber! Then some difficulty- not every time- in changing gear. Driving gently and VERY smoothly,I got home ok.Yake up in 1st needs real care, and selecting reverse needed patienc, but it didnt feel like a clutch drama, more like a g/box mounting or gear likeage or is there som,ething rubber in the drive line? Something got hot and smelly! Any advice out there in cyberspace!!
