Gentlemen.

I am in need of some assistance. I've had my 1990 964 Tip for four months now, during this period it has failed to start three times after it has warmed up. This morning I drove for about 45 minutes then parked outside the house, I returned to the car 10 minutes later and it won't start. The immobiliser disarms fine, I turn the ignition key and nothing, the starter won't crank at all. If you leave the car for a couple of hours it starts first time. Any ideas are most welcome. I had to walk to work today after a session with my physio on my back, I'm not a happy Bunny.

Kindest Regards

Tod

I had a similiar issue in my car - new starter motor fixed it. Not sure why when it was cold it was fine but when hot caused an issue.

I'd avoid a new Porsche starter and go for after market, such as Bosch which are considerably cheaper.

Sounds like it might need to go 'under the hammer'. I had same probs with my 91 C4 but at service the ECU was reset so the engine idle speed was re-calibrated. It's a commong problem but one which can be easily remedied without replacing parts. Suggest you contact your Porsche specialist to see if he can use his Bosch hammer to reset the ECU.

Having re-read original post not sure if above applies noting that starter won't crank.

Maybe complete rubbish, but one of my motors had this problem and it was a head gasket - engine heats up, seal fails, compression lost.

Was a few years ago mind

I had similar problems on my 968 - that was due to leaky injectors -- could invest in some injector cleaner to see if the problem then goes away (best used with some V-power fuel)

tell us when you sort it

I had this problem on the 964 I once owned same year as well,
I was shipping it to Spain and stopped off at some friends before boarding the boat, It had never happened up to that point. We said our good byes and got in turned the key nothing tried again nothing, after an hour of worry
suddenly it started and we got to the boat in time. On arriving in Spain same problem ended up last off the boat.
Cut a long story short it continued to do this whether the engine was cold or hot but only sometimes.
I got a local garage to disconnect the emobiliser and never had the same problem again.
Let me know if it works for you.

First thing to try is another DME relay...worth carrying a spare just in case anyhow.

Surely you can re-set the ecu by disconnecting the battery for a approx 10 mins, then re-srating the car letting it idle and settle itself down for another 10 mins before revving engine.

Yes, this may be the problem and if the DME's a few years old it won't hurt to change it anyway.

I tried to get one from Halford's but they didn't have any. You got one spare then?

Thanks for your help guys, I've tried all of the obvious stuff but to no avail. I've just been speaking to Jonas from JZ Machtech and I'm gonna send it to him to sort out. The bloody thing did it again yesterday and was stranded for over an hour again.

Cheers anyway.

It turns out it was the starter motor, they also foyund that one of the distributers was knackered and that the inlet manifold was leaking, the total bill will be about £1,250.00p. I didn't think it was running too bad, I can't wait to drive her when I pick it up this afternoon.

Resistance can increase as the temperature rises, hence why the starter won`t crank when it gets hot. Things like the earth strap can also give the same symptoms and are affected by heat / increased resistance.

Couldn`t have been injectors, head gasket etc as the engine wasn`t turning over, similarly all the DME controls is the ignition & the fuel pump, not the starter.

Hope that helps.

The old leaking inlet manifold gasket gag.
Fallen for that one myself.
The bill wasn't from a little firm 10 miles out of Tunbridge Wells was it ?
Starter motor AND distributer, two interconnected failure that just seem to happen at the same time, every time.
Im not buying it mate.
If it was the starter, which can be bought for £159 that failed, whys the bill 1250 ?
If it was the distributer, these are £270. Unusual for both to simultaneously go.
The old inlet manifold gasket leaking is just padding IMO.
Pull a pipe off on the induction side of the engine, same thing.
Big bills for fvck all.
