To all the folks on this forum who bash the Cayman: We'll, Alzen's car has been pretty fast finishing 4th at the Ring last weekend

I suspect people that 'bash' the Cayman on this forum have probably never driven one.

My Dad has had his new one for a couple of weeks and loves it. Cayman S, all the bits and the new Aerokit too, and it looks bloody lovely and handles beautifully. Nice little GT3 type boot spoiler works well I think, small enough not to look silly large enough to add to the look in my opinion.

The Alzen Cayman is indeed an excellent piece of kit - it is beautifully engineered when you see it close up.

I believe I am correct in saying that it runs a GT3 engine in a high state of tune.

In the VLN races, it is extremely quick in a straight line (more so than a 997 GT3 Cup) and clearly has better balance due to its mid engined layout.

If Porsche ever build a Cayman ClubSport version, I hope they take a leaf out of Alzen's book and use the GT3 engine - it could well be the one of the purest Porsche's ever, if they also lighten the car as well. Here's hoping smile.

Kind regards

Steve

not bashing the Cayman but a Golf finished 8th (and Astra 9th) above a 996 GT3 cup car. I don't think that makes the Golf or Astra a better car smile

In a 24 hour race all sorts of factors affect the final positions and this is reflected by the hot hatches in the higher positions.

That ain't never going to happen. Porsche have already explained patiently to anyone who will listen that the 'RS' is their race homogulation series, and they will only build a 'RS' version of any of their models in order to go serious international racing.

The best you can hope for is a 'Clubsport' or CS, which has limited lightening and brake/suspension improvements, and which is to allow customers to buy a road car for occaisional competion use.

Oh yes, IIRC a GT3 engine costs between 2 and 3 times as much as a series production flat 6.

Ive driven them and never disputed its potential track ability..i just dont think it has enough grunt to be a quick road car when you cant 100% commit yourself through bends or late braking.Elises,VX220r's are quick track cars and not such quick road cars..scoobys and evo's vice-versa..its what you buy a car for however i think most Caymans will be seen in Sainsburys car park rather than Brands Hatch.

My post actually said ClubSport not RennSport.

However, much as I might hope for a GT3 engined Cayman, I agree it is highly unlikely because such a car would be dynamically superior to a 911, and Porsche are religious about not damaging their "halo" model.

Kind regards

not bashing the Cayman but a Golf finished 8th (and Astra 9th) above a 996 GT3 cup car. I don't think that makes the Golf or Astra a better car smile

The Golf was basically a works car, and a serious piece of kit, sharing very little, but body shape with its road going counterpart. The Astra, much the same, is a development of the touring car, and again nothing like the hot hatch road car. These are serious race cars.

The Cayman runs an RSR engine (with 525 ps) and they had tried to source a V10 (CGT) before the race, at least that was the rumour in the paddock. It is one of three caymans, and so far removed from the road car, it is hardly worth comparing the two. Alzen himself has been quoted as saying the mid engine layout does not suit the Nordschliefe.

At least the GT3 cup car, is actually very close to road going GT3/RS's. What you see having so much success on track is what you get when you buy one of these cars for the road.

Don't the cup cars cost double (or even more) than the road GT3 - so not really that close.

To buy a cup car? No, they are pretty much the same. Maybe a little cheaper.

Isn't the RSR a fairly big step up from the Cup car though? Which I thought the winning car was. (And run by Manthey)

Fairy 'nuff, but why do you think there's a market for a GT3 engined Cayman at ~£70k in preference to a 'CS' with the std engine and some lightening at ~£45k?

The other CS's were done due to customer demand i.e. there wasn't any - whereas now Porsche have huge demand so no reason to badge up pared down cars...
