Had a cursory look for a used 997 C2S in the spring and have now come back to the market with a very real intention to buy.

Now, is it me, or have the used prices gone up!!?

If so, why?? Surely just cant be a seasonal thing with summer here?

Haven't really been keeping an eye out but could be true. Suspect its because everyone was waiting for the facelifted version to be released this autumn/2008 based on the original rumours and so prices dipped a little (apparently new 997 orders fell as well)

However, now that the 998 is not expected for another year (or so I believe..??) then current prices have stabilised a bit.

Just my thought - could be wrong.

Cheers.

I think the explanation is more personnal than others have suggested. If you were only 'window shopping' or 'day dreaming' in the spring (no insult intended) it was probably likely that your eye would be caught by the lowest prices and you'd think "yep those prices will do!". Now you're looking seriously and therefore being more choosey, you're dismissing the cheaper cars because, for one reason or another (mileage, condition etc. etc.) they don't fit your criteria, and finding, like most of us, that only the best - and therefore more expensive - will do!

I sold my 997S recently and think prices have dropped even further. Glad I shifted it when I did smile

I have also noticed that prices seem to have stabilised - 6 weeks ago, there was a number of TTs under £45k on the classifieds, sticking to the thread there was also a number of 997's under £50k but there does not seem to be as good a selection at the moment - maybe owners have decided to keep them over the summer months. Although i have noticed that a few cars that were selling privately have appeared on various independants websites at the trade-going rate.

I am sure Henry would have a theory on what goes on at this time of year.

I am on the hunt for a 03/04 996tt and did have a cursory look at 997C2S prices; imo 996tt still represents better value for money

It was a decision between the TT and the C2S. TT is a great motor, just preferred the involvement over outright pace of the TT

Both fabulous cars and yes I expect the C2S to lose more but I don't care. Sod best value for money, this is very much heart over head decision smile

Most understandable of course. Personally, when I was younger the 911 turbo was my dream car it still is today; even if the GT2-3/C2S'(s)are more involving et al they do not evoke the same affection for me.

JIMBO 2 - Both fabulous cars and yes I expect the C2S to lose more but I don't care.

I have saw High Mileage TTs at £36k Jimbo, i dont where they are going to bottom out but it is worrying - Note that someone probably paid over £92k for a TT when new. I suspect the 997 will hold its value better than a 996 but not as a good as a 993.

Kay C - Any day now, its looking like a 996 C4S though, i couldnt find a good TT at £42k that didnt need 2-3k worth of work to get a OPC warranty on it and bare in mind £42k was already £2k over my budget.

You should have bought mine then..seriously though i wouldnt pay 50% of the price of a tt for a c4s..the difference in the 2 cars is so much more than that..my c4s was the most disappointing car i have owned for the money and the 996tt was the best by a long way..c4s only has the downsides that a fat body car offers without the outright speeed..also tt better engineered and subsequently more reliable.

I agree Kay C with everything you have said on "THIS" point, the TT is a fantastic car, it just seemed all the private ones had some kind of issue that was costly fix and i cant really justify paying £40k+ for a car that needs work done straight away - the TT at my local OPC felt brilliant, solid no knocking or creeking noises but was £55k.

Finding a good one seems to be a problem although there maybe one-off well kept ones like yours but there is a shortage of examples up here in Scotland.

i would wait however long you need to - to find the right TT and save the extra cash in the meantime to stretch your budget. When i started looking into porsche i fell in love with the c4s shape then starting test driving and finally bought a TT - so glad i stretched my budget to get the TT. I have a good customer who bought a c4s about the same time as me. Last time i spoke to him he wanted to sell it cos it wasn't quick enough whereas the TT is too quick for road use.

i know for me i would have certainly regret the decision interms of performance regardless of anything else. The 4s is a great car but lacks that wow factor that the turbo has. all in my opinion of course.

Speed point is interesting as i am in the lucky position of having a good friend that lets me drive his Gallardo the odd weekend and having a 4WD 500bhp Gallardo at your mercy i assume is on par with a TT X50 and what i found is that at no point was i ever using more than 70% of what the car could actually do. I am not sure when/where i would really use the speed difference apart from when hooning along a motorway - How much faster is the TT to the C4S in real terms? I remember KayC saying it was M3 fast which to be honest is probably fast enough for me. (Needs to be able to keep these pesky Type Rs at bay thoughsmile)

Note that i would be using the car everyday and probably putting at least 10k miles a year on the clock. The OPC salesman when spinning his sales patter showed me the invoices which he used as some kind of selling to point to describe how not a penny has been spared on the car wheras i was thinking F**ck Me! A Cash sale invoice owing £3740???, Crested centre cap £29? Pollen Filter £32? A Brake De-dust? What the F**k?smile

you pays your money you chooses your car.

the c4s was quick don't get me wrong but the turbo is a different car in terms of performance. If there was not much in it then why did and do porsche build a turbo version. Figures on paper don't always tell you the full story. if the 4s is the car for you then best of luck. I'll stick with my turbo thanks but i would love it to have the sound of the blue 4s with the pse that i saw last sunday. yum.

A 996 C4S is pretty much same performance as a 996C2. I say pretty much as the C4S has the same power but is a bit heavier - though you hardly feel the difference on the road.

I would say that an M3 is pretty much same performance as a 996C2 - I have owned both and they are pretty much even up to silly speeds.

The 996TT (that I have now) is a lot faster than them both but agreed you only really can exploit this on very open roads.

You can apply that thinking to any car - a Veyron probably isn't that much quicker down a twisty back road than a 996TT X50 - no real chance to use the massive power........a 996 Turbo X50 isn't that much quicker than a 996C2 which probably isn't that much quicker than a Civic type R etc etc.

What I love about the TT is that when the road does clear & you can use it - its frightening how quickly the speed piles on - something I never really felt with the C2/C4S or M3.
