Folks,

I keep finding myself in the classified sections looking at 1971, '73 etc 911 cars. This must mean I fancy one.

I am not a technical person, or inclined to spend weekends fixing/nurturing a car.

I wish to ask you their practicality as follows if I buy and actually use it to pootle around:

Is it still going to last if it has eg 90,000 to 120,000 mls on the clock?

Easy to live with?

Is it's build quality solid ie; will bits keep coming loose and falling off?

Any pre-purchase trade inspections possible? Which places would service it, and how often would it be required please?

All other points from you all warmly welcomed.

Thx.

'71 -'73...............if ur lucky u ll get exactly what u pay for , BUT U REALLY GOT TO LOOK!!
mechanical side all pretty basic , no nasty modern electronic nasties , save spark box everything else easy to get , MFI pump nearly always serviceable ,but new /full refurb, if u can get one abt £2000/ 3000 , suspension brakes all do-able .................its the body work that counts ..............it can cost easy £20k whether its a T ,E or S ,once u start its a bit like the Forth bridge if ur not diligent u just never end redoing ...............hint /clue get it right first time
If u buy a 35 year old car and look after it, likely means a bit of nurturing , mileage cud nt matter less , mine had 66 000 miles when i bought it 4 years ago, now coming up for 90k / 2 years refurbing 2 years driving daily , including Spa and back fro a track day couple of weeks ago
Take ur time and try enjoy the search .................be pedantic, hold out for a good one and it ll be worth it............anything below £15k likely to be a nightmare ...........all matching numbers , rebuilt by reputable company, £60k for an S .........
With due respect to p heads try www.ddk-online.com or give Nick Moss a ring at Early911.com have fun

Vic has it in a nutshell. They rust like Alfas of that period - the tubs too - the floor was galvanised from 1972 (IIRC) but nothing else. The tub has this gloopy platicised underseal on it that becomes brittle and holds water nicely. so aside from rot in the body panels, you really need to ensure that the inner wings front and rear, door shuts, kidney bowls, boot floor are OK. Then there's the sunroof panel, rot around the front scuttle, rear side windows...

Take someone along with you who knows these cars and knows what the rot looks like and where it may have been covered up...

Engines - chain guides should have been replaced, chain tensioners converted to hydraulic, injection has to be spot on - otherwise expensive...no oil leaks, broken head studs.

Rotten oil tanks, battery boxes.

Probably more, but that's my 5 minutes' worth.

Are you thinking of using it as your main car and do you have a nice dry garage to keep it in?

You should have been at Castle Hedingham last Sunday - probably one of the best 'classic' Porsche events ever held in the UK, with an awesome selection of 'pre-impact' 911s assembled.

This would have been the ideal opportunity to get fully acquainted and educated with the pros and cons of owning an earlier car.

The setting, weather, ambience and gorgeous cars, were all so seductive that you would have probably been swallowed up - hook, line and sinker.

Next best thing might be the Silverstone Classic at the end of July.

Vic, I'm from another PCGB era - Bryan Walls...dear old Roy Gilham wink ...in the days when we had "Trading Post" and Porsche Post looked less like dentist waiting room material and more like a club mag (I'm in 2 minds about whether this is a good or bad thing).

...and I restored a 2.4E in the days when the only place you could buy pre impact parts was from Bert Gear at the Husbourne Crawley autojumble (before he found 944s, that is!)

(question)... wouldn't the OP be better off with an 80s 3.2 possibly with some paul stephens (for example) type 'retro' styling?

At £45-60k a pop. They do look good though. Not so sure about the backdated 964's.

The replica route is well trodden but you still have to fix corrosion, change front wings, PUs, bonnet, some panel changes to the front too IRRC and even then the interior gives it away. This all adds up and why PS's cars are priced as they are.

Vic - I believe you have a few years on me yet... wink

Take your point, PS doesnt change the wings though does he? Him and a few others lengthen the IB wings to look like early items. Which then leads to arguments about whether the headlights are at the right angle I think. There is also a DDK'er who is currently trialing a long bonnet in GRP that can use either the early slam panel or the IB slam panel. (Second agent oranges DDk recommendation btw, very knowledgable bunch, and always prepared to give advice, or decent answers to dumb questions, which so far have been the only kind I've asked.)
Replica seats, headlining, carpets etc all available if you are prepared to pay for it.

does anyone have a view on whether an 80s 911 would provide a similar enough experience to a 70s car (but with less hastle)..?

Not from personal experience, but I think that backdates can be as close to the original as you are prepared to pay for, including 2.7 mech injection engines if you like, or you can get the "look" from the outside with the mechanics of a later car underneath. (993 engine transplant anyone)

Andrew Frankel compares his RS rep (based on an SC) to a late 3.2 in this months GTPP.
