996 or older 911?
Discussion
I have just inherrited a 2000 m/y 996 Coupe via a company I bought in Germany. The car is reasonably specc'd and in good condition and I reckon worth around £30k (its lhd which I want). This will be a second car for me and mainly used at weekends as I have a new Merc SL500 as my main car.
The question is this and I know that this question has been discussed in a number of fora (correct plural of forum???) but am I better off keeping this car or changing it for an older air cooled 911 either a 993 or even one of the rarer 964's either RS or Turbo?
I would be really grateful to hear your views as well as interested to see copies of any articles that have been written on the subject. I have owned 2 996's in the past and was very happy with my 2000 996 Cabrio but less so when i replaced it with a 3.6 Targa. I pick up the Coupe in Germany next week.
It will be good to get back into the Porsche fold after a 6 month gap!

just noticed that looking down the threads there is a similar one already there - albeit the guy is looking for something from scratch rather than already having one.
As an alterative tack anyone fancy trading a lhd 996 for something older?
Or any reccommendations on where I should go to look for top quality older 911s - I would actually prefer another lhd car as I will be spending quite a lot of time on the continent and I already have a car for here.
There seem to be some reasonably priced 964 Turbos around - anyone have any views on these? Also how does the 3.3 model compare the 3.6 (apart from the obvious)?

Hmmm. Ultra Violent (UV) is the chap to ask about 965 Turbo 2s.
I have driven a 3.6 Turbo. Didn't do much for me, but 3rd gear is like falling off a cliff. It isn't as bullet proof as the 3.3 and is more expensive, but has more power and big red brakes. Looks better on the speedline splitrims too. The 3.3 is more tuneable.
If you are into fiddling with cars, the 3.3 is the one to go for - spend the money on doing it up to your spec. The 3.6 is fine to keep unmolested, but running costs can be high as Autocar found out when they ran one.
If your car is worth 30k, I would say look at a 993RS for about 35-40k LHD, a 993 Turbo for 35k-45k LHD-RHD or a 964RS for 25k-35k LHD. All IMHO, as Don will quite rightly mention the Boxster S if he's watching
Cheers
