Discussion
I have been requested by E-Mail (by someone who bought a 994S from a breaker) to provide him with the previous owners service history here @ Hartech in 2004 - which is illegal and against the data protection act - which I explained. As he is the present owner I suggested he obtain previous owners details (which he can get from the DVLA) and get their permission after which I will happily provide the details requested.
I think this was too much trouble because he didn't like that - but he wanted me to provide details anyway as apparently we had provided some details before (I think from this that he may repair these damaged cars and sell them on).
So I replied listing the main jobs done but no invoice details and explained that I have not got time to go through all the previous invoices and delete all the references that may be covered by the data protection act, print them out and post them. I am sure you will appreciate that with identity theft so common I must protect customers from such requests - data protection act or not.
His reply made it clear that this was not good enough and that he intends to tell everyone at Porsche Club GB about our position (i.e. I assume - bad mouth us for not doing what he wanted).
This seems really unfair - he is not our customer and I am under no obligation to him but did spend a lot of time and three E-mails trying to help only to get this brush off and implied threat to my reputation.
I am sure most of you appreciate the time it takes to offer my experiences from the business and technical side of the fence to this forum - which I do to help others and not for gain as I have very few customers anyway who are active on the forum (indeed I replied to an E-mail from a reader in Australia yesterday just giving advice and no personal gain possible). I still privately own 3 Porsches I have had for years and never had time to finish off minor things and enjoy driving them because I am so busy at work - so the time I offer like this (and indeed on this forum) is precious and there is plenty else I could do with it.
So - if and when this story surfaces at a PCGB meeting (as threatened)- if you appreciate what I do on here and understand and support my position - then please offer your support in reply in my absence.

Sounds like you have been more than fair, I wouldn't worry too much about threats of bringing this up at a PCGB meeting.....he obviously doesn't know the club that well...there appear to be far more pressing matters which do not make the agenda....this wouldn't get any further than banter over a beer at a country pub club meet

You are under no obligation to provide him with any information at all and probably shouldn't from a confidentiality perspective.
Sounds like you've been more than reasonable. What will PCGB do? Black ball you for not revealing servicing information to a stranger? This all sounds suspect to me and he's trying to build the case on a stacked car - you should tell PCGB about him....
You could offer him a good will discount on an inspection and report......

I know I can't help from over here Baz , but it pisses me off that some cowboy has put you under this stress and pressure.
I think you've been more than obliging to him already and him using the PCGB as a form of blackmail is pretty despicable. I suspect that the club committee would see it this way also.

Will be keeping an eye on the PCGB board to see if the poor soul who has behaved like a spoilt child decides to post anything, will be a fun set of responses
Given the comments from Baz about the person in question possibly reselling cars my thoughts lean towards the fact that any car will be worth a lot more if it has a service history from Baz's firm, and hopefully leaving the protestor in a financial hole if it doesn't.

For what it's worth, some people are bullies, and some people just like complaining. The bullies are the worst --- because although one feels the weight of logic, one still worries for the customer.
I have found that our loyal customers (outside this industry) are very willing to stick up for us in forums such as this, and so long as you have treated your customer base well, you should have no reason to worry.

Hi
I have seen your posts here, and you go out of your way to help others, you may not realise it but I think your reputation is cast iron because of this
I am a PCGB official and if he turned up at my local meet he would get more than a flea in his ear lol...
To be honest he sounds precisely like the sort of IFFY trader that you are not...!!!
For anyone reading this, I have never met Baz or had any dealings with his company and my opinions are based on his excellent reputation (word of mouth) and postings here....
All the best Brett

You obviously have no obligation to tell him anything, although if you just blank out any information that identifies the previous owner I think you'd be clear on the data protection front. Having said that I don't think this chap deserves your efforts.
As an aside to do get sick of companies quoting the 'data protection' act as a reason for why they can't be arsed to do something or simply don't want to. It's all about information that can identify an individual, not anything else. I've had companies refuse to tell me details about myself siting that! Anyway, nothing to do with the issue in hand, you just set me off
