I've got a six month old Boxster. One of the back tyres is losing around 1.5psi a week.

I'm wet with these things but it's been suggested it might just be a leaking valve rather than the bead or a slow puncture.

As the OPC is some miles away I was going to nip it down the local ATS to have them take a look.

I figure if it's a valve and it costs me £10-20 it's still less hassle then getting over to the OPC, it's some way away, and if it isn't a valve which could be deemed as a fault it'll be the tyre which of course won't be a warranty thing and then they'll bend me over.

Just wanted a few opinions, if you were in my shoes would you even bother to try the OPC?

Put some spit on the valve, if it bubbles go to ATS and just get the valve core changed.
Check the tyre all the way around the tread for nails- you'll have to move the car to check the bits you cant see obviously. See a nail? Leave it there and take it to ATS for repair or a new tyre depending on where the nail is.
Doubt it's leaking around the bead but ATS should be able to pop the wheel into a tank of water to check this.

Finally... OPC... for tyres....computer says no.

Took it to ATS. They had the tyre off and sprayed it and there's a tack/nail on the inside near the end of the tread/face.

Repair's a no no apparently.

So how much should I expect to pay for a pair of Pilot Sport 2's N0 Porsche rated etc. - 235/50/17?

These are six months old with 12k on them and around 3-4mm of tread, I'm assuming it's always best to change in pairs.

3-4mm? time to bin them.

For replacements try www.blackcircles.com

They'll ship them to your chosen fitting depot and have always been cheapest and very efficient.

Wow I'm really surprised at that tbh. I'm not one to go down to the limits "Because they must still be legal" but that still seems a lot of tread.

ATS quoted £320 a pair all-in, VAT, fully fitted etc.

Many of the online tyre places don't seem to list the N0 rated stuff but that price doesn't seem too bad compared to what is available online in that size.

£134 per corner from mytyres.co.uk. Fitting's usually £12-15 so perhaps £295-300 all-in. Makes the ATS deal worthwhile, partcularly if they're in stock.

I try to bring ultra clean wheels when I get new tyres fitted; that way they might take a bit of extra care and any fresh marks will be visible and not camouflaged by road dirt. And you might wish to remind them to use sticky weights, just in case.

As suggested when you mentioned this yesterday, just take it to a local tyre fitters and let them leak test it and sort it out. That's all your OPC will do, but you'll be paying them for the privilege.

Down to £137 a corner fitted for Pilot Sports. That's at the place work use, no extra for sticky weights etc.

I'll do some digging but I don't think I'll beat that, the fact that £320 seemed reasonable shows how little I know.

Maybe I'm too cautious after spinning my TVR into a banking a few years back.
New tyres probably would have made the difference between "oh" and "oh shit!!"

It could just be that the valve needs tightening up. Go to Halfords and get a valve screw thingy, should only be about 99p. Very useful thing to have in the car (would have been very useful last New Year's Day when I was supposed to be driving to the airport at 3am...)

The OP has already said that they found a nail in the tyre.
