Hi all,

Can anyone tell me about replacing the rear discs on my '84 944?

I've just got the car and they need replacing for the mot due to corrosion. They have the inboard handbrake.

Are they held in place by the wheel? Will the hand brake mechanisms go BADOOOOOIIIIIIING and fly all over the place when I pull the discs off?

I have ordered a manual for it however that'll arrive too late to be of any help with this as I need to get it on the road asap!!!

Spankyou in advance for any help!

Jack up, unbolt wheel, remove screw(s), unbolt calliper, remove disc, refit new disc, refit calliper havin copasliped pads, slides etc. adjust handbrake knurled wheel, refit wheel, lower jack, repeat for other side. Drive & test.

Geting the screws out of the disc can be a pain, impact screwdriver helps & it's worth checking the knurled wheel works on the handbrake adjuster, whilst the disc is off.

Thats awesome thank you for your help! I thought it'd be simple like that but wanted to confirm this rather than just dive in!

I've got the cambelt to tackle next. . . . .

Has anyone ever done one of these to a 2.5 8v?

I've ordered new belts, rollers and tensioners etc.

It looks straight forward to assemble its just the tensioning sequence and tools required to do so. I have an autodata book here at work which describes the procedure to do the later varient (still single cam) of this engine so I'm assuming its the same procedure, can anyone confirm this?

I'm hoping the water pump is ok though, The part on its own was something like £200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! eek.

Make sure you have the handbrake OFF before removing the old disc or it will pull the internal shoes away with it and probably break the retaining springs too mad

That's a bit surprising; I don't remember it being that expensive for my 968. A word of warning though, the w/pumps don't last forever. If its an old unit you'd be better off replacing it when the front of the engine is off.

I would strongly recommend giving the water pump & thermostat a looking at with the belts off. My S2 was re-belted last year, and after 5 weeks ownership it's overheated with a suspect water pump! Check the parts suppliers like Porsch-Apart - but you're still looking @ £150-ish!!
The rear discs will be a piece of cake compared to changing the belts!

Well, we changed the belts last night. All the rollers and tensioners were completely fubar'd but the water pump felt perfect so I left it, last night showed that its not that taking the belts off isn't that bad a job so if it gives up I'll change it than. The pumps casting looked in a better condition colour wise to the engine block so I suspect its been changed recently in the cars life.

One thing I can't get my head round is the whining noise the engine makes?

I assumed it was belt wear related but changing all of that made zero difference. We even tried slackening it off slightly but that made zero difference! Very odd! One of the guys here has owned one and said it made a similar noise but not quite as loud so who knows!

The belts should not whine. It's a possible sign they are too tight. Did you use the Porsche 9201 Tensioner tool or an aftermarket one like the 'Kriket'? There's a guide here:

I think I've had 4 belt changes in my ownership and the only time they whined I took it back and the indy slackened it off to the loosest allowable tolerance

New belts do whine! Everyone remarks on it & some whine ore than others.
As for the water pump the issue is that their are 10 bolts in it, all very slim & how long it takes is dependant on how many break! Pump prices vary from model to model, 2.5 is cheapest, 3 litre is expensive & 2.7 is apparently difficult to get hold of.
