Above link shows the latest review of performance cars by Car & Driver in the annual event at Virginia Raceway. GT3 again proves a serious weapon and the Audi R8 looks a bit weaker than expected.
Unfortunately you did'nt get the best time, you were three seconds adrift from a Corvette Z06. Better luck next year and enjoy your great cars.

"we invented the “Lightning Lap,” "
My word what a fantastic invention.
No seriously, apart from my total misstrust of journos both US and UK, I am awaiting the sport auto super test, which is either out now or due out soon, whereby Herr Von Saurma will be giving his views on the R8 and how it fairs on
"the world’s most demanding racetrack, the 12.9-mile Nordschleife of the Nürburgring near Cologne, Germany."

Are the America Spec GT3s the same as the UK versions ?
what about the fuel RON ? are they pushing out the same horsepower
as the UK versions ?
From memory, the CA fuel RON's are 85, 89 and 91... I obviously dont know what they ran this test on (it doesnt say).. but they quote the Exige's output as 220bhp.what about the fuel RON ? are they pushing out the same horsepower
as the UK versions ?

I understand the comment re US writers favouritism, but after reading the article you will find that althought The Z06 beat the GT3 he found the Porsche more rewarding. If only the Z06 was right hand drive then numbers would sell in the UK. Although I'm quite happy with my LHD version, the car is simply stunning and recently beat a £180k Mercialago in a half mile test and crushed it round a circuit, great value for money and great daily drive. Love though damn GT3's though, one day!

it'd be interesting to see how the ZO6 compares on the 'ring

The sport auto test had it at either 7.45 or 7.47. Either way it is quick. The time you refer to is set by jan Magnussen, Ex F1 driver and works Corvette pilot, no doubt in a very well prepped car. Saying that I am told all the cars sent for these test are specially prepped.
The Sport Auto tests use the same driver, therefore eliminating that variable, and have at least some consistency.
I have been considering the Z06, however, could it stand up to the hammering the Porsches get, or would it spend its life being repaired?

The one thing about american engines is they are not strained... which is why bhp/litre tends to be down on European/Asian cars and economy sucks...
As for build quality and electrics, i couldnt say, but i know most US engines are built to do 250k with no issues...

Re the Question of Z06 reliability I did much research before my purchase as track days was on my list of driving activities. The car has been developed for many many years (aka 911). GM provide a 3 year 100k miles warranty and the car feels bulletproof. Areas to go wrong are likely to be electronics due to the mass of "gadgets" available to play with. In the states it is quite normal to add 50-100 bhp through minor tuning (not turbo's) and i haven't read many exmaples of mechanical problems. Reliability should be OK.
R8 test in Sport Auto is out:
With standard chassis (i.e. no magnetic ride), ceramic brakes and sticky rubber the R8 did 08:04 which is just one second faster than the 997 C2S with ceramics, sports suspension/LSD and regular Michelins. They were disappointed as not all of the R8's potential has been exploited by Audi. The car is - although a fantastic tactile machine - too much focused on the everyday drive.
BTW: Was on a track day in Le Castellet last week where there was also a Z06 amongst the Porkers. The Z06 proved to be a hell of a machine and easily played with the 997 GT3's...

Just to build on the importance of the driver: Herr Röhrl did 08:11 in a Cayman S, six seconds short of the Sport Auto time of the 997 C2S (with LSD) and who only managed 08:26 with the Cayman SThe Sport Auto tests use the same driver, therefore eliminating that variable, and have at least some consistency.
