Hi All

I have around £38K to spend on a new car and are torn between either a 2 year old Cayman S or 5 year old 996 C4S. The car will be used daily and include a couple of trips to the 'Ring' each year.

Which one would you guys recommend? Things to consider are driving pleasure, depreciation & running costs.

Would it be worth spending a little extra and getting a MK1 996 GT3?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I thought this was a scoop!!!!

Spend more on a gt3, you'll lose less and enjoy more.

GT3 would be so much better, but you will need to spend some more and if you use it every day you will knock the mileage up

i have a gt3 mkII and am now buying second car due mileage

Richard

How many miles do you do a year? I would expect to do around 8000 miles a year and keep the car for 3 years - would this have a big impact on depreciation and running costs?

They didn't make a Cayman two years ago.

Think running costs, not being funny but the Cayman will be 20k/2 years a 996 will be, well I'm not sure exactly but mileage for mileage it will need servicing more often and will cost more to run in direct running costs.

Also any Cayman you buy now will still have Porsche warranty on it whilst a 996 won't unless it's an OPC or a private sale with an OPC warranty left on it - basically it's another grand to factor into the equation.

GT3 I guess but if a C4S tickles you a turbo would make you laugh louder and longer for a bit more. Probably a bit easier to live with too.

Out of the two you mention, I'd go for the Cayman - awesome on track, practical and a much newer car than the 996 - nicer inside and to live with etc...

996TT sooon to be found in a price range near yours ! (and easier to live with than a GT3 if not so exciting a track proposition)

And just as fast, unless you're on an empty motorway

You're looking at three very different propositions:

  • GT3: A race car you can use every day without too much pain
  • C4S: Most beautiful shape of the 996's (IMHO). Great everyday drive but for an old car priced way too high and making TT's a very compelling alternative
  • Cayman S: Excellent daily drive with razor sharp handling and lowest running cost of the three. A great and "new" car but not the rear engined classic
Try them all and see for yourself

Get a 996tt without a doubt(lots of tuning potential reasonably cheaply)..996 c4s is too slow, all show and no action..and what can you say about the Gayman, slow, dubious looks at best and what gets over-looked is that the Gayman is less practical as it only has 2 seats.

I have been driving a Cayman whilst my 996 (C2) is being fixed. I would say that, although the Cayman is a nice enough car, it doesn't give me anywhere near the thrill of the 911. The mid-engineness of it takes away the character and I feel like I'm left with a perfectly competent but totally unexciting car. As I keep saying to the wife: "It's no 911". Obviously she looks at me blankly.

It probably doesn't help that the Cayman is Muppet-tronic, either.

Personally I think Caymans are over-priced, too. Plus the Porsche warranty is only 2 years isn't it? So a 2-year old one will be out of warranty anyway.

Funny that, are you sure she isn't two timing you, because that’s exactly what my wife does(it’s almost as if they are the same person),they have no comprehension of anything other than moaning about bugger all

Don’t even get me started on map reading
