Why so many 997 GT3's for sale?
Discussion
If you look at the clasified section of Pistonheads, you will find a large number of 997 GT3's for sale most of them white? Now I thought that GT3's were among the most sought after of 911's, and even though no car holds its value these days( and why should it, it's not a gold bar, its a luxury consumer product) you don't expect 997 GT3's to glut the market, so what's going on?. It seems to me that either:-
1. Its all the same car, or
2. The market is taking a serious crash and everyone's backing out, or
3. There is some problem with GT3's that no-one's letting on about.
You all know much more than me, what's the score?

997 GT3 and RS production has finished and is all sold out. The final cars are being delivered during the next few months.
If the original allocation claims were correct, then approx 150 GT3s will be delivered to the UK, plus a few unofficial imports.
With such a limited production run it's inevitable that some will have been bought by speculators and others for short term ownership.

That explains a lot, I was beginning to think it was because there was a problem with them. It does seem a bit odd when lots of something that is supposed to be very exclusive start appearing in the small ads.

I also suspect a bit of a stalemate here, no one wants to pay list or over for a used car, no seller wants to be first to lower prices.
Usually the sellers lose this one-it only takes a few unsold cars around to unsteady a delicate market and the prices start to edge down, especially with a niche product such as this where people are trying to sell for over list price. cardigankid said:
Hi Geneve. How's your own one going? Any comments after a few months ownership?
Surely though they haven't stopped production of the 997 GT3? Why should they do that? Or do you mean that they only produce so many a year?
I adore it. It gets plenty of use and no issues, just awesome.Surely though they haven't stopped production of the 997 GT3? Why should they do that? Or do you mean that they only produce so many a year?
When the GT3 was launched I was told by Porsche hierachy that GT3 production would be limited and their best guestimate was that about 950 cars would be built in the first year, of which about 150 would come to the UK. Thereafter there was no information about additional production. At Goodwood they confirmed that production was fully allocated and would end later this year. And, my OPC said that they could no longer get any GT3s as they were all spoken for, and were returning deposits to several disgruntled customers. The emphasis is now on the 997 GT2.
I asked if there would be a Mk2 and was told that there was no indication of this, but it was a reasonable assumption, perhaps towards the end of the 997's model life ('09/'10).

A car like a GT3 will always have an active second market, as:1. Its all the same car, or
2. The market is taking a serious crash and everyone's backing out, or
3. There is some problem with GT3's that no-one's letting on about.

Some people buy a car like this thinking its a nice idea to own something a bit rawer, and then realise maybe its not what they really wanted long term.
Exotics tend to trade owners more than normal cars.
There are punters who like to own a car new, then sell whilst they can get near list and so have owned a car for near no cost.
Market taking a crash is perhaps a little dramatic - but typically the premium over list for slightly used models of a new car does not last long - look at the AMV8s as an example. F599 might last a bit longer as there is no 'next level' so you pay up or wait.

Geneve et al - related question plz - how many 997 RS are the in the UK after production ceases this Sept ? thanks
No info re RS' but was quoted this re the 997GT3 from PorscheGB;150 in my07
87 in my08
no more production after
so total production 237
I would suspect RS is half that.
If you have been watching the pistonheads classified you will know that I am a bit
ed out at the moment. Just basically sold everything. My hope for the future when I can is to build up a little fund which in the end will let me buy a GT3. I think after mature consideration that is for me the ultimate. When I took my Boxster back to the garage to sell there were two stunning cars there waiting to be picked up. 997 Turbo Tip with PCCB and GT3. The seats were the adaptive sports seats in black with red stitching by special request. Naff, you may think , but not so. It looks fantastic. I had a little seat in it and lets say it comfortably exceeds all my expectations. It was white but so are most of them by the looks of things. Geneve's Meteor grey looks pretty good.

ta...about 120 RS in the uk then ? that sounds low compared to the 996 RS ?
good news for owners to be
Nah there were 108 UK 996 RSs IIRC. Wouldn't surprise me if they did a similar number of 997 ones.good news for owners to be
Lots of rumours of SA and Jpy 996 RSs around, but never seen anyone say that had one, so not sure that there really are that many.
