944 wheel choice
Discussion
I've been told the original wheels on my S2 are "good" for the cars age, though not eye catching, the centre caps are crap, and the tyres have only a few thousand left in them.
Would it be better to get the wheels referbished at say £55 each + new tyres + new caps or pick up a decent set of later 17inch wheels with good tyres on them. Im not sure what to pay for these, dont want to upset the handling and not sure about if spacers are needed etc.
Any thoughts ?
Cheers

18's will fit but not advised by Porsche due to extra stress placed on
bearings ( ? ) so most opt for a 17'' cup wheel, either cup 1's or cup 2's. These look good on the car and wont cause any adverse problems. Cup 1's however are at a premium due to being highly sought after items by the '64 boys wanting spare track wheels to save their magnesiums. The other option would be a 17'' Boxster wheel if you can live with the spokes running one way on the drivers side and the opposite way on the passenger side. Have a look in the classified 944's for sale on here as theres bound to be some pictures of different wheels on the cars.

I run 17's without issue on an S2, and the 968 ran 17's in sport and CS guise. They do tramline but it is is often down to the make of tyre, and the suspension set up.
I also have a perfect set of D90 16's for sale with v nearly new Conti's on the rear and good Uniroyals on the front. They need no work and are spotless and yours for only £300,
Sorry for the shamless ad.......

I know I am a bit of a saddo for things like this, but keep those D90's on there. They are excellent wheels, and suit the car really well (IMHO, few aftermarket 'styling' accessories on any car ever have actually improved the look of it.)
They are also one of the lightest wheels available for the car (hence better handling) and pretty stiff (although you'd really need to be pushing hard to notice the difference in stiffness between one type of wheel and another.)
You also don't get tramlining, they do clear the arches and the brakes and don't need declaring to the insurance company.
Why change?
Oli.

Hi All - my first post on this site...
My old S2 had a set of Cup alloys from a 993 on it. I got them from ebay (£125 for four mint alloys a two decent tyres! best purchase on eBay ever!!) then i sold my D90s on eBay for £195 (Sweet).
Anyway, whilst i agree with most of the above comments, i feel the design90's don't fill the 944's arches well enough - the cups did this superbly and didn't need any spacers or modifications to fit.
I also would stick with the 16" size if you do decide (theres load of boxster alloys out there, just check that the offsets are ok or buy some spacers (not as cheap as you'd think..)
Good luck anyway

993 cup alloys dont have the correct offsets for the 944S2. You need to be on the look out for some 968 cup alloys and these are lick rocking horse shit. expect to pay £400+ for a real set with or without tyres. Less for copies but again be sure to check the offsets. You are looking for 7.5J x 17 et55 and 9J x 17 et65 (IIRC)
You can send your current wheels to be powdercoated for a lot less than £55 each... I think I paid about £25 each for mine last time.
Happy hunting

Well Im booked on my first ever track day at Castle Combe for the 19th with the 928 owners. I'll see what everyone else is doing, I think some people keep a set of wheels for track days and a set for every day driving.
Wish me luck as I try and keep it out of the gravel/grass/walls etc.

I got 16" boxster wheels on mine, they fit right on but i do have 6mm spacers on the front for personal tastes. They suit the car really well, somehow looking a lot cooler on a 944 than they did on a Boxster.
Plus, cos theyre the standard wheels on early cars, Boxster owners will be selling them off cheaper after buying cooler wheels for their own car.
I got 4 immaculate wheels plus half decent rubber for £250 plus shipping. Then sell your wheels on to some VW enthusiast. God bless Ebay.

I swapped out my D90's for the same size and offset 16" wheels from a 968. These are like the cup 1 design but with thinner spokes. IMHO they look better on the S2/turbo then on the 968 but ppl keep telling me they have gone out of fashion, to small or something. Personally I much prefer them to D90's
You don't need 17" for more grip, 16" stock sizes (205 front 225 rear)in something like Toyo t1-r gives all the grip you need unless you are fitting track suspension and/or have a massive turbo engine upgrade planned.
Track special tyres and the right size slicks are easier to source for 17" then 16" sizes as used on 44 so that is one reason for changing.
17" wheels are heavier then 16" by a large margin even worse if you change from a D90 to a 17" cup copy, this may not only make the steering heavier but will make the handling worse on bumpy / rough roads.
If you want to go faster better suspension works a million times better then bigger wheels.

... and even then I'd question whether it is necessary. The S2 can feel 'over-tyred', and apparently has lost the nimbleness of earlier cars. Putting bigger tyres on it still would be a bad thing, IMHO. Oli.

Porsche wheels are only around 2-3lb heavierCopy wheels are roughly 8-10lbs more
