Bose sound system - taken for a ride
Discussion
Hi
I sadly aquaplaned in my 2004 boxster and met with a centre reservation - and it's a write off. Fortunately I'm o.k, altho' strangely no airbags went off!
However, the breakers of the car agreed to take the stereo cdr23 and bose door speakers out, and send them to me. The car had a bose sound system.
So I've received the CDR 23 unit, but the speakers are just two massive speaker box units with Nokia written on them (part no. 996.645.012.01). Are these the bose speaker units factory fitted to my car door, or is the breaker taking me for a ride?? Can you help this rather confused damsel in distress!!!!???
Anyone want the parts?

ouch. glad you're ok. bit worrying that they don't have "Bose" on them. Are the two companies related (Bose and Nokia)? Maybe this is why (hopefully!). Brief google didn't show anything.

We've got one of their home entertainment systems and it is stunning!
Because of how good it was my dad ordered it in his new Audi and it is incredible!
But each to their own
I think its generally regarded that with BOSe you are paying for the name, not the quality. while it's not bad by any means, with home entertainment systems it is well-outclassed by other manufacturers.Because of how good it was my dad ordered it in his new Audi and it is incredible!
But each to their own

However, it is normally an improvement on factory fit audio equipment, and retains the OEM ,look.

Bose gear is ok in cars but as home hifi its not very good at all..probably reflected by its price however..imo of course.chillerman said:

Very well engineered stuff. In Audi's the Bose upgrade just gets you different speakers, the headunit is the same iirc (this was the case a few years ago when I had an Audi). The home units are expensive but sound very good for the size, this is where they excell the laws of physics mean they can't sound as good as a full size speaker systemBen
pre bose (on the early cars) porsche used nokia stuff as the uprated sound system.
so if you have an early car, with the hifi upgrade then it will have been nokia components and not bose.
on a 996 you have a seperate power amp under the bonnet with the hifi upgrade pack and that also has nokia on it.
edit to add, i see yours is a 2004 car, the rear shelf speaker should definatly be bose, mabe this is the only bose part?

I went from the sound upgarde pack (standard) on my 997 to Bose on my 987 and i haev to say the Bose system is a lot better - there is no distortion at relatively high volumes. I also listen to quite a few 'books on cd'
and it is great for that as distortion is quite evident on voices only at higher volumes.

Did you ask them to take the amplifier out? If not, you're really missing the 'Bose' bit...Much of this 'in car' audio branding is interesting to say the least. Although Bose produce the stuff for Porsche, I was involved with a project for Sony incar audio kit for a certain major vehicle manufacturer. None of the kit was actually designed or built by Sony, it was just approved to be of a sufficient sound quality... It was designed by the same company that did their basic audio options too...which amused me....
Funnily, the same manufacturer designed an oil pressure gauge into an instrument cluster of their new hot hatch(designed by the same company that did the 'Sony' audio kit )... But the engine didn't actually have an oil pressure sensor fitted, just a switch... The needle was showing a damped engine speed signal... But they wanted an 'oil pressure' gauge because it looked 'sporty'....
Brilliant...

Oh PS: The airbag detonation depends on crash intensity, loading and lateral and longditudinal deceleration rates. Often if you collect armco, because its designed to catch cars, and slow them not just stop them dead, (like hitting a brick wall) You'll find that the imapact and following deceleration isn't enough to require detonation. Thats also why sometimes you only get some bags going off, rather than them all, as people would expect.
I guess the question to ask is 'Did you whack your face on the steering wheel?' If not, you probably didn't need that one at least! ;o)

REf the airbags, they only go off in the most extreme situations. The car has to decelerate very VERY quickly very much like if you hit an unmovable object and the car stopped moving instantly rather than slowing very quickly as your body has to hit the inflated bag with enough force as to cancel the force of the expanding bag otherwise the bag coul thruow you backwards and inflict for damage to you.
They're quite scary to watch when they go offeg I work in a Vauxhall garage and we stock replacement airbags which have a shelf life. Once past this shelf life we cannot sell them and they have to be disposed of but before throwing them away we have to let them off.
We let a few off and the bag inflates and deflates almost too quickly to see, the charge inside the is bigger than a shot gun cartridge and goes off with the same amount of noise. This is poointing directly at you don't for get! Anyways, upon registering this we though we'd have some fun! We turned one unit upside down so that the bag would expand downwards with the hope that the unit would shoot up into the air, which it did!
It went very high, almost level with the top of an electricity tower next to our car park!!!!
Quite a force!

I'm assuming that you had informed the local police/fire authorities that you were performing controlled detonations and had them safely restrained in a controlled environment....
