Hi
Ive just bought a becker 4720 for my 911 c2 my2000 to replace the CDR22 which i think is in it currently

this has the satnav without looking obvious, but was wondering -

how do i get the existing radio out without wrecking the facia?

where does the gps sensor need to be fitted to work, does it mount behind the dash?

if anyone has fitted one, or knows how to please let me know

many thanks
Jon

The fascia surround clips off - use a cutlery knife with a cloth over the end to get behind it and avoid damaging the plastic. Once that is off you've got loads more access, easy to remove existing radio (make sure you know the code, just in case....). Insert Traffic Pro and, provided you don't have a separate amp, everything should be fine. If you do have a separate amp you'll know because you get no sound from the speakers, easily fixed by bridging 2 contacts on the connector. As for the GPS receiver, to avoid making holes in the dash I removed the cover over the alarm sensor and, with a bit of jiggery pokery and some rather painful arms you can just get the cable through the hole there - that also exposes a metal plate you stick the receiver to (mine was magnetic) and then refit the cover which doesn't affect GPS reception. Technically you need to also supply a feed so it knows when it's going backwards but in reality that is a pain to do so just ground it out (or it thinks it's going backwards the whole time!), doesn't seem to affect the accuracy!

I did it on my 996 a couple of years ago, more details on rennlist (including a diagram telling you which contacts to bridge to get your speakers working again)

NOTE: all of this assumes your car is pre-MOST, if post MOST look here:
http://www.ultima-gtr.org.uk/becker.php

ETA: If it has CDR22 and is MY2000 I think you're pre-MOST and therefore straightforward!

Ah, just found it.... put a 'jumper' between block A pin 5 and block C1 jumper 6 and it should work just fine (if your speakers go quiet after the installation). Interestingly I've done this job on my own 996 C4 and have a friend who's done it on his Boxster S and on both we agreed the sound quality from the Becker unit was noticeably superior to that from the OEM unit. Just put a jumper wire in rather than cutting and splicing then you can remove it as if it was never there. Whilst I had the fascia out I also took the opp to hardwire in my RoadAngel by taking the power lead through the same hole as the GPS aerial and tapping into the back of the cigarrette lighter - it draws so little that you won't need to increase the fuse rating.

Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Lee
thanks very much
do you mean the sensor in the middle of the dash top dash underneath the windscreen? have you got a pic of where you mean?

isnt the reversing signal wire already in the multi plug, or do i need to connect that seperately as well?

was thinking about doing excatly the same thing with my road angel, is there enough room to pull both wires through?

little worried about removing the cap and drilling holes

thanks

Erm, aren't the OEM units (CDR 22/23) made by Becker?

Indeed they are, but all I'm saying is to my ears the Traffic Pro sounded better! Maybe it was just newer and the lens and pick-up were cleaner.

Right, here we go....

The cigarette lighter is indeed on the ignition circuit which means your road angel fires up when you turn the car on - which I assume is what you want!

Both wires fit throught the hole under the alarm cover without needing to drill. There are a copule of screws under there (which may be torx head IIRC) and removing these makes access a lot easier, but getting them off is a devil of a job due to the windscreen being raked back. ...assuming you don't fancy taking the windscreen out!!! The cover does just lift off - depending on the size of your gps aerial you can either fit the cover over the top which makes a completely invisible installation or mount it alongside where it's hardly visibile anyway.

Reversing wire - just earth it to the car chassis. If you really really want to there are 2 reverse signal wires you can tap, one goes from the top of the gearbox and one goes to the reversing lights, but after poking around inside various bits of trim and under carpets I never found them and gave up before doing any damage. It honestly didn't affect the unit's operation (but you do need to ground it to earth).

Coupester - see earlier reply for contacts to bridge. I'm sure I had a diagrma but I'm still looking for it...

Just remembered - when you take the centre console out it is easier to take it out with the radio still in it then remove the radio. Pop the buttons down either side out (remembering where they go!) and you can pull it out a bit further. Also, you'll need a torx screwdriver to undo the 4 (?) screws that hold that console in.

The whole installation took me 2 hours (with no prior knowledge), second one I did on a mate's Boxster took 30 mins. Both completed with no visible signs of the installation (Traffic Pro and Road Angel in both cases) and both subsequently de-installed with no indications either bit of kit was ever there.

One other thing..... if you look on the CRD22 that comes out you'll find a plastic strip on the metal case somewhere (can't remember where, sorry). You'll need to put a sticker on your Becker unit in the same place or every time you lock the car you'll get a beep as the alarm thinks the radio has been stolen!

Here's some links from renntech that explain various bits of the process - same procedures as I used but sometimes someone else's words help the penny to drop:

...and here's the Becker pdf that gives you the pin-out for the amp bridge:

Quicky which should make the GPS aerial fitting easier is to undo one of the speakers and mount it in the hole that is forthcoming.

Whe my traffic pro was fitted the fitter used the nearside speaker and was able to feed the lead to the back of the radio working in the passenger footwell.

Jon,

Once the speaker is off the aerial was fitted to a convenient metal bar with double sided sticky pad. The recepetion was excellent so not affected by the speaker and he ran the cable through in a couple of minutes so not too difficult.

As Lee put above. The amp needs a power on indicator. The original brown/blue wire needs to be spiced into the white one on the other block.

Agree - just fitted a Becker GP to mine and its better than the CDR22 with same amps and speakers
