To re-create or not to re-create
Discussion
Hello All,
I’m new to the Porsche gig but I've got the bug bad now and must scratch this itch. I see that the purchase of a Carrera 3.2 is well covered in another forum from January and it's been very helpful. My intention is to get an 88-89 G50 equipped Carrera and embark on a RS re-creation project (Autofarm/Tuthill/RennSport Classics). I was just wondering what the general consensus was regarding these types of conversions. Are they really worth the expense? What kind of value will they retain? Any advice is welcome and would be good to know which improvements/equipment are a must and which pitfalls to avoid.

I have just completed the conversion of a G50 3.2 to resemble a 1971 S, with an S typr GRP front bumper, steel non-ducktail engine lid and GRP rear bumper. The conversion is fairly straightforward using genuine Porsce steel parts and quality GRP bumpers. If this car was fitted with a ducktail it would be fairly close to an RS Touring with full side mouldings and bumper trims (the alloy/rubber strips along the bumpers). I have also polished and anodised all the window surrounds to complete the early look. The car remains completely standard mechanically. The budget for this car is around £25K with the donor car.
I am now part way through the conversion of a 3.2 Supersport to a 2.8 RSR replica for another PHer. This car will be a much more comprehensive conversion with GRP front wings, bonnet, RSR front and rear bumpers and ducktail and a centre fill tank. The interior has been stripped out and a 6 point cage is being fitted with modern Sparco seats, full harneses and lightweight carpets and door cards. The suspension is staying stock (ie full Turbo suspension and brakes) but we are fitting 9" and 11" x 15" Fuchs. The motor is a 3.2 stort stroke, based on a 3.0 bottom end with increased bore, 10.5:1 barrels and pistons, GE60 cams, twin plug crankfire ignition and an RSR style twin outlet exhaust with SSIs. This car is being built to a budget of around £45K.
It's obviously difficult to predict how much these cars will be worth, but there are certainly Autofarm built cars that have changed hands IRO £45K

Thanks Nick. What about starting out with a Turbo for the RSR re-creation? - it seems that these are more readily available than the supersports. I need a reasonably civilised road car as well as good on the track. I'd like to be able to use it with my two children. I guess this limits the use of the roll cage......
I guess a Turbo would be just as good a starting point apart from the 4 speed gearbox. We sold the 3.2 motor out of the Supersport to build a high revving short stroke based on a 3.0 bottom end, but the turbo motor could either produce a 3.4 or 3.5 motor with it's long stroke crank (same as the 3.2) as long as we put some decent strong conrods in. Oddly enough I have a very nice 87 Turbo 3.3 for sale. We would just need to find a decent 915 5 speed gear box....

There is a cheap Turbo for sale on PH now, http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/178111.htm

Nick - would you say that your product is as good as autofarm's? Why is there such a difference in price between your recreation and autofarm's - just the higher spec? Also, what is the name of the colour you have used on the '71 S recreation?

How could I possible admit to building an inferior product?
The Autofarm car was built to a different standard. It would have been stripped to a virtually bare shell and everything rebuilt or replaced and fitted with a 3.6 motor and Recaro Sports seats (around £3000), whereas my car was virtually untouced mechanically.
