dummy's guide to buying a GT3 privately?
Discussion
I am looking to buy a (probably mk 1) GT3 privately in the South East. How do I...
1 get the porsche approved warranty on it?
2 find someone to inspect it for me to stop me buying a knackered, tracked out lemon?
3 work out what spec I need?
4 work out what else to do to make sure I end up with a corker of a car?

Road or Track use?
Basically, find the right car. If it is in original spec., have it inspected by an OPC. If it passes you can buy the official extended warranty and then renew it each year.
A modified car might not be eligible for the extended warranty. Get it checked by a recognised specialist.

True if you want to get a Porsche Warranty on a car that only has 1 more year of being warranteable (sp?)... Basically, find the right car. If it is in original spec., have it inspected by an OPC. If it passes you can buy the official extended warranty and then renew it each year.

And guess what the OPC will say... 'yes sir, it can be warrantied for £895'.
For a Mk1 GT3, get it inspected by either JZM or Parr and save the £895 warranty cost towards getting it prepped, fuel, driver training, consumables, etc...

Good choice.. MK1 1 get the porsche approved warranty on it?
2 find someone to inspect it for me to stop me buying a knackered, tracked out lemon?

Have a 111 point OPC check (for the warranty) warranty cost £895 (once pasted the OPC check)
Get PARR, JZM or Fearnsport to look her over inc. having the rev range checked.
Spec. Not that important, buy the best one you can find. (A/C is a must)
It took me 5 months to find mine, and a few check overs later (PPI's) I found a 16,000 mile Comfort Spec with Buckets. The check over is so important, I had one looked over that needed £10,500 worth of work.. (the car was for sale privately, and now up for sale at a well know dealer -
)I used JZM and PARR for a few PPI's both very good. I then once bought my baby had Fearnsport do a Stage 1 Geo.
Colourwise, that is down to your choice !! I knew I did not want Speed Yellow, but any other colour would of done.
If you are going to Track her from time to time, a MK2 brake upgrade could be a worth while thing.. (around £2000 upgrade)
Service history is a must, if a GT3 has been tracked or not, having a good record of care is very important.
Things to look out for -
Diff
Clutch
Rev Range 2 (rev range 1 is fine)
Gearbox
The engine (if serviced) are bullet proof.
Let us know how you get on, Rebember "Buy the best one you can find"
Good Luck

Thanks for the help guys. It's going to be a mostly road car. I'm sure it'll go on track at least once but i have a radical for track days.
I didn't quite understand the rev range 2 check Dan. What is that?
On the warranty front, clearly the when it is too old the OPC warranty is no good. Are there any others?
Colour is important - any colour except silver!!! There are just so many silver 911s!
If anyone knows of a good un let me know!
Graham
PS yes the superlight will be going I'm afraid. It has to fill the huge depreciation hole that the TVR will leave!

The rev limit, so when putting your foot down to much before changing gear..
(this is fine, as long as not too many)
Rev Range 2 -
This is an over Rev, Say.. If you were changing down from 5th to 4th, miss 4th and went into 2nd, the rev limit would cut in but would not be able to hold the Rev's, so the engine would go past the rev limit (into Rev Range 2)
Colour wise -
Nothing wrong with Silver -

I guess by commenting on silver as a colour I am potentially offending the majority of porsche owners!!

RHD. I will be using it daily, so don't want the hassle of LHD. With a rare car, colour always has to be last in the criteria (unless it's ghastly!).
Was talking to an owner yesterday who's view was that if it's not going to be a track toy and used a lot on roads a GT3 was a bit of a PITA esp on anything less than very smooth roads. So far I have only driven a Mk2 and it felt ok.
Is there a big difference in this regard between the Mk1 and 2?

I seem to remember that you are local to me Graham. You're welcome to a poke around my Mk1 (and a ride out in it) if it will help.Email me through my profile if you want to take a look - I'm usually around during the day as well.

As others have said if you live in Surrey area, by all mean I would be happy to take you for a drive in mine..
I did drive a MK2 before making my mind up to go for a MK1, little in it to be honest.. The MK2 has a wider track but both felt the same.
As long as the Geo is set up to standard, you'll be fine in a MK1..
