About to buy my first porsche - either a C2S, C4S or Turbo. Cant decide.......

Considerations:

Budget 40-50K
2 Week Old Baby
Wife who is not entirely convinced.

Other car is a rather dull Audi a6 Estate so this has got to be fun but am also trying to convince wife this is a viable family car (for weekends and trips to Frog)!!

thoughts?

If you can find a good one in your budget then Turbo.

- Has the lovely wide body as the C4S but tons more hoof ... really really lots more hoof.
- It's a genuine 2+2 so small kids can come for the ride too (but be careful, the G-forces can make them quite queezy if you're enthusiastic!)
- The wife will understand why you wanted one when you hoof it yes
- You won't be at the lights in your Carrera and have a Turbo pull up alongside you and make you wish you'd bought one.

Personally, I'd go for the sublime 993 Turbo ... and if you have a look in classifieds, Kennyboy has his beautiul white one for sale ... just a year too soon for me though.

oh - and you can drive all day in 'em and never feel tired. Brilliant tourers with a surprisingly usable boot yes

Various child seats fit in the back, Britax Trio & Mamas & Papas Pro-Tec - for the pushchair - Quinny Zapp(Not sure about 2week old baby though) folds into a small bag which just fits into a standard C2 front bonnet - The 4WD versions have less storage space in the front bonnet, there is also some handy space behind the rear seats for some squishy bags.

Wither its a good idea as an everday car with a new born baby as the amount of stuff that has to be lugged around is ridiculous is a different story but you have the Audi for that as i do.

P.S Just a matter of time before you are recommended to buy a 996 TT so be warned - Personally if your budget can reach £50k?, i would try and source a fully specced 2005 997 C2/C2s - Quality of the interior just seems on a different level and it has a hint of the 993 in the looks department and there a few under £50k in the classifieds.

Your biggest problem is going to be that the baby needs to be rear facing for the next 8-10 months. The only way to do this is to put him/her in the front , having gotten a deactivator switch on the passenger airbag.

If wifey is not inclined (or dare I say it , not physically able!!) to sit in the back seat for the journeys you're intending , then you're snookered until the baby can go forward facing.

So it's best you have a cosy chat about this before moving any further towards Porsche ownership....

interesting but looking at previous threads on this I found this that made my heart jump for joy!!:

Nope.

I asked this question how so many time on this forum and others, and never got a straight answer.

I eventually got it right purely by trying myself, no help from the common PH wisdom, the Maxi-Cosi Cabrio rear facing seat for 0-9 month does fit on the back of a 996.

The front seat does need to br brought forward a bit, but it fits no problem.

Wish someone told me that, I have pics of it fitting in the 996, but am on a dial up connection.

Good luck.

JL

PS: Oh yes, and a Buggaboo also fit perfectly with the wheels off, I tell you, 911, a sensible family car.....

Strange as my kids Bugaboo does not fit into a 997 hence why a Quinny Zapp was bought? Hmmm

Anyway now you have no reason not to buy one.

Go the C4S route, in fact take a look at mine in the PH classifieds. Can't be that far away from you either.

That's the first rear facing back seat that I've heard of .. Might be worth a PM to gulliver to confirm ... He's a nice guy and I'm sure would oblige with an answer ...
Having sorted all that out ...
Go turbo!
  • It'll depreciate less.
  • It's preformance is far far superior to the n/a 997 (gt excepted)
  • It's got a fantastic bullet proof engine that should have been fitted to all post '97 911's , but wasn't , I presume due to finantial constraints.
Therefore it's the closest thing you're going to get in a modern 2+2 911 that harks back to the old ways of the overengineered days of the aircooled Porsches.

After all is said and done , each will trumpet their own favourite (just like me!!) but only you can decide ... So get out there and start test driving. It may well take you 6 months to find the right car for you , but it'll be worth the time put in.

Doesn't look like the most comfi ride ever for the poor front seat passenger , so just get the car before she makes this realisation!!

Next to nothing in it so far (well to worry about at least!). Had a service but nothing needed done apart from plugs which i can understand as there only getting done once every 4 years. First year of ownership = £700 for service + warranty £895(same no matter which posrche you run). Its slightly thirstier back and for eg high teens for turbo, carrera was managing mid 20's but on give and take roads both seem to sit about low 20's. Managed 30 mpg in both at some point but theres not an awfull lot of fun in that lol.

I think you will find that the TT gets through service items a bit quicker than a C2 / C4. Clutch, brakes, tyres, plugs specifically (oh...and fuel).

That said, I haven't looked back since I swapped my C4S for a TT! Completely different experience!!

if you can get a decent turbo then go for that if not go with the c4s as it has the turbo bodykit, wheels and brakes.
