I know the majority of you guys slate tiptronic transmission but I was just looking for people's opinions on it. Looking for a Porsche once I have sold mine - probably a 987S and the majority of my miles are town driving/work commuting. Used a DSG for over two years which is incredible and I know the Porsche tip won't compare but it can't be that bad can it? Also are they reliable - do they cost just as much to run as a manual etc i.e. no clutch replacemnt but do units fail/need more maintenance? Thanks in advance for any replies.

for me it ruins the driving experience, slow boring changes.

I have driven also the paddleshift 911's at Palmersport which do not impress me either.

If it was like the M3 CSL or the F430 paddleshift then I could be tempted but manual is far more interactive and exciting...

I drive mine around town, short journeys, long journeys... no problem.

Someone (probably Porsche Salesman trying to sell me a manual) told me that what you save on clutches you spend on brakes with a Tip. Probably b*ll*cks, given the price of a clutch!

I looked at both when I bought my 996 C4S and then again when I bought my 996TT. Both times I felt that the Tip took some of the driving experience away, even when using the steering wheel controls (lag in changing gear). That said, I don't drive in London and try an avoid too much driving in heavy traffic.

I haven't seen anything suggesting that the Tip has any reliability issues.

That's my 2 cents.

I drive a manual as an everyday car through London traffic everyday without any hassles.

Driven quite a few tips and actually like the manual function (although why they stick with the thumb buttons rather than paddles I don't know). However, the auto function is truly a joke and Porsche should be ashamed for still selling it. Races to fifth gear by the time you're doing 40mph, the kick down is dreadful, etc and generally rubbish compared to anything - try a Merc or Jag as comparison.

I'd go manual everytime until Porsche launch the PDK system (whenever that is...).

Just my 2p worth.

I would always buy a manual Porsche, however I had a go in Porsche's tip C2S Cab on their driving experience and was pleasantly surprised - very relaxed adriving and would make sense around town. You also get a hell of a shove in the back when you put your foot down and it kicks down a couple of gears!

And here's another 2p! I think this post is going to be worth a lot of money in the end!

I'm currently looking at a new 997 and the dealer told me that I didn't need Tip. He said the manual is a much more enjoyable drive than the Tip (and rem that he's losing out on the price of it if I don't order it!). In saying that I've driven a C2S Tip on a track and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, I'm nowhere near a track god and never will be (sometimes I have to stop and think about the diff between oversteer and understeer - joke lol) But for my abilities the Tip was great fun around the track. I think I'll still go manual though.

I've had other cars with tip/ auto and whilst I think Mercs are rubbish in all manners of speaking, people tell you that you must buy an automatic. I tend to agree with that for Merc, but only because at resale you will lose your shirt without it. Driving one however is like hitting the accelerator and then having a nap before the power comes on. Rubbish.

I don't think having manual will hurt you on the resale of a Porsche, as the people buying them want to drive, not put it in auto and sleep on the way home.

As I say, just my tuppence worth!
