My girl friend and I crammed our belongings into the Elise(and i mean crammed)and set off to Italy thru Belgium, France, Switzerland(yes twisty ,mountain roads) and finally to the Italian lakes...it was a fantastic Bill and Ted type trip.

A Porsche dealer i know was surprised i made it back.."do you what Lotus stands for"..he enquired.."loads of trouble usually serious".

Why am i telling you this? WHEN i get my new car u know a practical one with a boot front and back i will be off down thru France,Spain the mountains and into Portugal. Has anyone done this and was security a problem - i have heard theft of and from cars can be a problem down there?

I have visited France, Spain and Portugal at various times in the semi-recent past, and would say that crime is always going to be a concern - but that these countries seem a little better than England.

As long as nothing is left on display and you don't appear to be a rich tourist flashing the cash, you should be fine.

Key things to remember (generally):

1) Lock the internal compartments like the glovebox and the centre console locking compartment.

2) Don't leave the car roof off out of your sight. If you do make sure (1) above and remove items from the door pockets. As Dom said leave nothing on display.

3) This seems so obvious....Pay attention as to where you park the car. Thieves do not like to work in the full view of the public in any country.

4) Choose where you stay wisely: I always stay in Country House style hotels. Often the character is more enjoyable but also they tend to be isolated so there are no passers-by looking at your car, only hotel staff and guests. There is always plenty of parking at these places too...

There is no reason why most European countries should be viewed as being worse than the UK in my experience.
