Wrt the fuel , i think that it won't register unless you fill it more than half full. Normally what happens is that the sensor only works to half empty and then the computer kicks in to estimate range..

Can't help on the other issue I'm afraid ...

yes
They're the ones to look up!

The lumpy idle could be any of a number of fairly small glitches , no.1 among them , the mass air sensor which costs around £100 and is an easy fit.
So don't despair just yet.
If you could go into more detail on the problem maybe some of our resident experts could advise better ...

ignition coils ... ?

Known to crack / fail - you'll need to replace all 6 as they are all likely on the way out ... frown

Check your oil - mine was exactly like this after a long run... I filled up the oil and it was fine..

Check it using the dipstick rather than relying on the computer sensor...

The bit about having to full up a certain amount before it registers is true - it's an intentional design feature although I can't for the life of me think what purpose it serves.

As for the rough running, another vote for Hartech.

I thought I had read somewhere that it was only RHD cars that had the crazy fuel gauge. Something to do with the tank position.

I can't believe it is beyond the wit of man (or Porsche) to find a way of getting the level sensor to work to the bottom of the tank!

Sounds exactly the same as my 997 a few weeks ago.

No fluid leak, all temps/pressures ok, car starts but sounds rough and misfiring - bad vibration as well. Sound about right?

If so, I'd say your coil pack has cracked as someone has already said. Mine was covered under warranty as is a known fault.

All the best.

thanks for all the advice, i climbed under the back of the car tonight and i think i have found a crack/split in the right hand side exhaust, does this sound like it could be causing this as there are no lights on on the dash to indicate anything else
cheers

.. depends where the split is - if it's pre cat or inbetween the cat and backbox, then this will cause the sensors to run the car rich, if after the last sensor, then it will have no impact at all ...

If you have no CEL light on the dash - then either the coil or above split is unlikely as the engine management will report it.
