Probably length of a piece of string type question, but how many miles would you expect to get out of a pair of OEM front pads on a 996TT? No track days, just fast road driving on bendy roads - so plenty of hardish breaking I suppose.

Reason I ask, my warning light has come on tonight. I've only had the car 3 months/6000 miles and was told prior to buying that brakes had been done. I'm going to try and get a free set of pads out of the OPC that sold me the car in the morning, but if 6000 miles is about right then maybe I won't bother biggrin

Any idea how long i've got left with the warning on if I just drive/brake gently?

I'm about 60-70 miles from OPC so I'll have to drive up to get the pads tomorrow and get my mate to fit them. My mate has his own garage and is a very competent mechanic - I'm right in thinking so long as I buy OEM pads, him fitting them will be ok with the Porsche warranty aren't I?

Cheers,
Boon

Euro car parts some pads advertised as genuine - will warranty be valid if I get these?

Euro can supply Jurid or Textar pads, both are OE suppliers to Porsche.
Discs and pads aren't warrantable items, fit what you want and have it fitted by who you want (as long as the parts are good quality and the teccy knows what he (or she) is doing there shouldn't be any problem.

Cheers Slippydiff.

Europarts only have ATE or GENUINE in stock. Anyone used the ATE pads before? They're a lot cheaper, I'm a little concerned they might not be as good as the genuine ones?

Ate are used by the VW Audi Group and BMW as OE fitment.
Genuine pads should be Textar (ask to have a look at them) I'd go with the Textar pads, there's nothing wrong with Ate stuff, but if Textar supplied them originally to Porsche why use anything else ?

Are you seriously looking for cheap brake pads for your 996TT?

I stick to Porsche branded pads for my Porsche and buy the cheap stuff for the tip run car.

There has been much debate on Rennlist over Textar brand non OEM pads. It appears that whist Textar do make the pads for Porsche, they use a different compound for the non OE stuff.

Your choice ultimately but personally I wouldn't be taking risks with the front brakes of a TT.

No no no no. Definately not! biggrin

To be honest I hadn't even considered going anywhere other than the Porsche centre for the pads until I heard about Europarts on this forum. The Textar ones were the recommended choice but they're out of stock and I want to replace them ASAP even though I believe I should have about a 1000 miles left on the pad since the warning only came on last night.

This whole OEM/Genuine thing confuses me. I don't mind buying them from Porsche at all, I just don't want to pay more than I have to for the same thing in a different box. If the Porsche branded ones are definately the best, then that's what I'll buy. Regardless of cost.

The best cost saving advice is to use genuine parts and have the work done at an Independent garage. Thus saving on the labour rate and not the part Also, this doesn't void your warranty.

Goo luck.

Had a run over to Specialist Cars Malton yesterday and picked up a set of pads, warning wires and damping plates. My mate fit them for me today and I've bed them in using the (new to me) method of a series of hard braking from 60 ish to 10. They feel great, no vibration and no squealing. And no 'driving steady for x miles until they bed in' - marvellous! biggrin

Yep, that's the way to do it. Genuine parts, fit them yourself/get a mate to do it and then bed them in properly.
