New job, more travelling and the 996 has done 47k already (not yet 4 years old). I'm likely to do about 15k a year from now on and the car scheme doesn't allow a 997.

So the dilemna is do I buy a motorway whore and keep the 996, which seems a waste, sell the 996 and get a lower mileage 996/997 and plow on with 15k a year or do I stray into the arms of an RS4 which I can get through the company on a lease plan type arrangement with guaranteed residual and all maintenance and wear and tear covered ? (they also offer the XKR but I can't get too excited about a Jag other than it's noise and AM looks)

A test drive in an RS4 is to be arranged, but will it provide anywhere near as much fun ? Should I stick with pork but have the expense of changing every two years before the mileage stacks up ?

I keep talking myself around in circles....and my wife is no help whatsoever....any PH pearls of wisdom ?!

you might be surprised how good RS4 is - objectively a great car, depends if you feel a saloon with huge performance will fill the gap of a proper sports car. Its not just about getting from A-B quickly.

take the test drive, do what you want, what can we say?

RS4 is a top car and a worthy car of replacing the 911, however it's thirst is horrendous! With high mileage you'll be getting through the jungle juice!

The RS4 is a fantastic car!! Would it be an option to lease the Audi through the company and keep the 996 for weekends? wink

ive got a similar problem

my plan is to keep the pork and buy a motorway whore and use the pork one week in every three

keeps it running nicely without piling on a huge mileage

could never imagine selling it an buying a soulless pile of crap

I agree with wet wipe, why waste money on company car,you dont need RS4 on the car park motor way ,any way.Get diesel motor way hack and buy newer 911 for special occasions,RS4 drivers look at 911 drivers with an "I'll get one, one day" look, not the other way round.....But RS4 is a mega car....

The RS4 goes like stink, sounds great and handles like it's on rails ... but ... at the end of the day it is still a beefed up Audi saloon sat on your drive.

Get a diesel Fabia VRs, or an old 5-series Tourer or something for the motorways and keep the 911. You WILL miss it.

Have had the RS4 for just over a year now. I bought it originally as a replacement for an M3 with a view to shipping it on once the new M3 V8 arrived. 6 weeks ago I took a call from the BMW dealer wanting to know my V8 spec but told him I was on no rush and give me a call next year. Yes the RS4 is a very fine car and according to Autocar shades the new M3, although I didn't know that when I decided to hang on for a while.

Ownership of the Audi overlapped with a 997S and I rated to two equally enjoyable to drive on the road (neither were tracked), albeit if I had to choose one and didn't need 4 seats I would probably have gone for the Porsche. It is some years since I had a 996 but fading memory suggests that between the two I would likely go for the Audi if for no better reason than the sound of that 414hp V8.

Downsides. As others have mentioned fuel consumption is not good and a small tank means the range is barely adequate. Personally I don't like the steering wheel. The flat bit at the bottom feels like cheap plastic and slightly spoils what is otherwise a great car.

Thanks for the comments. The car scheme pays for all mileage so the RS4 thirst is covered and whilst I wouldn't be happy about my carbon footprint growth, it wouldn't be an increased £ cost to me.

If only the budget could stretch to the leased RS4 and keep the 996 I'd be sorted. My fear is that if the 911 goes I will always regret it. I will take the test drive, probably ponder a bit longer and then get the motorway hack....

In EVO this month the M3 shades the RS4, but they did say they were splitting hairs.

An RS4 - indeed any v hot Audi - always strikes me as a car people think of getting because something has changed & they need more space, more practicality, something a little more sensible from their car, never a first choice when people are looking for a performance car. Still great cars though.

As an aside - are they scrapping the RS4? Heard that the new RS6 would be the only RS car in the Audi line-up?

They only tend to make 1 Audi RS model at a time on the available production line. Apparently RS4 production is winding down amongst the 3 variants ready to gear up for the RS6 with it's V10 & twin turbos....is that sensible enough for you? rolleyes ...strikes me as utter madness!!!

As said before, the thirst is horrendous. We run an S4 and struggle to get it out the low / mid teens mpg in normal driving. I appreciate that your fuel is paid for, but you will get pissed off having to stop for fuel so often. Even the S4 is a great car though, with as much grunt as you could need (the RS4 must be awesome). They do feel an awful lot heavier than the porsche round the corners though.

They are quite smart I believe, the dog would be unlikely to fall for the trick of going out in one a second time having once experiencing the blowers coming on to boost....silly thngs is...some lunatics will get the standard cars chipped....carbon footprint anyone? silly

Being a Jaguar fan, I would go test drive an XKR then decide if you don't like it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, loads of power, very comfy and is one hell of a mile muncher if you'll be doing all that mileage.

As for the Audi

I was in a similar position recently - looking at a Boxster S or RS4 as they are roughly the same price (Ok so the Box was £10k cheaper). I didn't need the space so went for the boxster as it is a proper sports car, steering feel, weight etc, I love the RS4 and if i could afford both - i would!

If it were me as a car to do everything go RS4 - but bear in mind it won't feel as special (or as 'sporty') as the Porker...

Whereas I went from a Boxster S to an RS4. I was going to get a 996TT but I needed the space for new family.

If I was in your situation I would be tempted to get a secondhand M5/RS6 or similar (as you don't have to pay the fuel) to have something quick and reasonably interesting to bang up the mways and keep the 911.

The RS4 is a fantastic machine and the best one-car-fits-all-uses out there IMO but if you do not need the space and 4 doors why compromise on the sportier feel you will get with any 2 door / small boot coupe vs a practical 4 door saloon; even if the RS4 is quicker than a std 911 on the road 90% of the time it won't be as much fun.

(as a compliment to the RS4 I don't jealously lust after every 911 I see, I admire them all and will get one when my life allows but I am very happy with my car choice)
