Hotel to stay en route to Scotland?

Will be leaving London on a Sat afternoon at about 5pm, and want to break a journey up to central Scotland. Any suggestions? Obviously there are zillions of placed on LateRooms etc but they all look rather dreary. I would imagine that I would stop somewhere around Manchester, since I wouldn't get to the Lake District until quite late.

Book into the SAVOY in the Strand. About as close to Scotland as I'd want to get!

I used to stay in hotels in Manchester a few nights a week, every week until I moved up here. The only hotel with an absolutley secure and private car park is the Renaissance, good location too for restaurants and shopping. It's the only place I would stay when I was in the Porsche.

Lots of other great hotels though, just not so safe on the parking front.
