I've just had the build date for my Boxster S w/c 24th June so now need to choose a tracker type device for insurance.

Im really looking for a basic unit just for insurance purposes. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Current shortlist RAC Trackstar, Tracker Retrieve or Navtrack standard.

As much as I hate to say this get whatever system you go for from your OPC, fitted by them or their subcontractor. That way if the install causes any problems etc it's all their problem and covered by warranty.

A few years ago a colleague had electrical problems on an 8 series BMW and after 15 hours of investigation the garage put it down to an aftermarket tracker installation. You can then imagine the chaos that ensued with no-one wanting to foot the bill for 15 hours labour at a BMW franchised dealer.

PS - What spec did you go for?

Talk to your insurers first and get them to give you written details of what they want on the car - to the letter preferably. If they aren't fussed which sort, get them to confirm this in writing too.

There are different types of unit and different services for some of them. And if you don't fit the correct thing, they'll likely not cough up if the worst happens.

I have a Tracker with Trackback (the latter being an additional service I believe) fitted to my car. Have no idea if it works as the car has yet to be stolen. But it's what the insurers wanted. Luckily it was on the car already so I just have to stump up the annual fees (can't recall how much these are - 150 quid sounds about ball park).

Thanks - The best quote for insurance (by a long way) was via Halifax and they are happy with the standard alarm

i've just renewed my boxster s insurance after phoning around and ended up paying £800 full comp with tracker 'monitor' fitted. A-Plan insurance gave me a massive discount but the entry level tracker would not have resulted in discount.

i got my tracker fitted by the 'tracker' company for about £300 less than the Porsche Centre offered!

My local porsche and mercedes dealerships have both done tracker systems installations and charged the same price as the tracker companies RRPs. Although your experience would add a little more uncertainty to the decision tree.

After a bit of research I went for Navtrak's Pro-active system for my 996 TT . Cost was £500 for the install + £15/month.

These guys were really on the ball and had calls into my contact numbers within 15 mins on a few occasions when I ommited to disarm the system.

I never went with a tracker on my 996 when it was bought from new..The reason was that if it was stolen,I did not want it back having been thrashed. Also in the 1st year or nine months I thought insurance company's got you a new car if you lost yours.
