hi all,
new to pistonheads, wondered if anyone can offer any advice?
just bought 1st porsche...1994 993 cab, 69k miles.
all going well apart from need of new clutch and flywheel after 1week!...not ideal!
prob is the oil level guage on the dash continually has the needle in the red line when driving. when it is idling it is safely in the middle. having checked the oil (having let it idle for 15mins first) dip stick shows oil level is safely between the 2 recommended levels...if anything is 2/3 full...is there any reason the oill level guauge does this? or is it just faulty?! the oill pressure guage seems to work perfectly fine.
hope you can help
cheers

Oil level in the red whilst driving is perfectly normal, since oil is circulating round the engine. The gauge measures the amount in the oil tank, and the reading should be taken when the engine is idling and up to working temp on level ground. Your reading sounds spot on.

What he said. Ignore the oil level reading apart from when the car has been thoroughly warmed up and is stationary at idle on a level surface.

also, it should be at 75% - filling to the red isn't recommended smile

As a rough guide, you'd like the two needles to be pointing directly at each other whilst idling.

That way you know that the oil is properly warm, and the oil level is high enough without risk of an over-fill.

It does although easy to overlook. I never read mine properly and was then chastised!

After you have been out for a drive pull up on level ground and let it idle, that is the best time to read the oil gauge.

As said previously - Ignore whilst driving. (I just had the same scare coming home from work) read my book and all is ok. smile
