993 C2 or 964 turbo ?
Discussion
These cars are on my shopping list for a 2nd car and I wonder what are the good and bad points of each ?
Any websites that tell you any "well known" bugs to look out for when buying?
I am especially interested in reliabilty, running costs - I assume the turbo will cost more, but 100 % more or only ~ 50 % more ? (insurance, servicing etc.)
Also what where the major changes from 964 to 993 apart from the headlights ,rear multilink suspension and a 6 speed gearbox ? The interiors look almost the same.
thanks

One major difference is the 964 has solid valve lifters which have to be adjusted manually. (tappet clearance) To get to them, the exhaust system has to be removed, this makes servicing far mor expensive, whereas the 993 has hydraulic lifters that dont need servicing at all. I'm sure others will be along shortly to highlight many other differences.

How many miles a year and will it be used daily or just when the mood, weather and destination are right? For the former I would suggest the 993 and the 965 for the latter. As always, buy on condition and history. On places like JZ Machtech's website (http://www.jzmachtech.com/shells/service_index.php) you can get fixed price service costs that will illustrate the difference between the two.
Weren't you after a Caterham as well or am I confusing you with another Wong?
If you're one and the same, be very aware that Caterhams and 911s are totally different animals, especially the 911s you're thinking of buying!....
If I'm wrong and you are different Wongs then let me right that wrong Mr Wong.

Two very diferent cars - one n.a. and the other forced induction. The boost is hard to resist for some and tiring for others. The 964Ts are expensive to run - they were the flagship after all and as a supercar have supercar running costs. Budget on the running costs of a 965 being probably 50-100% more than the 993 (15-20mpg vs. 25-30mpg for instance).
As a result I'd agree that the 993 is a better everyday car and the 964T is something special for the weekend - 964Ts are certainly much rarer than 993s! Price wise - a good 3.3 964T is probably a similar price to a good varioram 993 (c.£25-£30k RHD). The 3.6T is much rarer and nearer £40k, if you can find one.
Of course if you buy a good 965 it may cost you less than a bad 993...so get a thorough PPI either way.
Finally, drive them both and see which you prefer!
BTW I have a 964T as my "something special for the weekend"...

Hi guys i am new to this, plus new to the 993. I have just sold my RS4 and bought a 993 Targa "last of the air cooled on a 97 plate" love it, its mint and did so due to the depreciation that was kicking in after 12 months with the audi. As far as running costs are conserned i dont think from my pre purchase research that they are too wild. I would suggest that an authorised dealers hourly rate will save money to?
