Hi All,

Having just sold my S2000 I think I'm gonna fulfill my dream and purchase a 996 next!

The one below has caught my eye, do people think this is a fair price, bearing in mind the mileage, but also the work thats been done at 85k?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/208354.htm

Also, can anyone recommend an independent inspection who can look over the car? I know Porsche can do this, but as the car has passed the age restriction for an OPC warranty I thought there may be a specialist that can offer better value for money?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Dan.

The car looks nice. Good options and history. Not that this is necessarily a reason for rejecting the car but how does a new clutch, air con condensers and other consumables constitute a 'major overhaul'? However it will mean you don't have to foot the bill for those items

Read the buyers guide on the Hartech website. You could also look at their maintenance plan but they are quite far away from you.

http://www.hartech.org.uk/

There is a well know specialist who does inspections but I forget his name. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to advise.

My last car was an S2000 also. I miss it dearly. weeping

As the car has some history at Northwood I'd ask them to take a look over it. They are a good outfit, helped me out no end with a 3.2 cab purchase.

Nice looking car, sports exhaust is a great option. Money doesn't seem toooo bad, but with an inspection you're bound to find a few things that need doing and I'd hope to get at least £1000 off that price.

Good luck!

Dan,

Peter Morgan may be of help for the pre-purchase inspection:

Also, you could email Mousem40 for a 996 buyers guide, which he worked on with Richard Hamilton (Porsche Club GB (PCGB)). It might be worth joining them for members only information on 996s.

Edit - I realise my first post may have been a little harsh. The seller has only listed some of the work. I expect 6k involves engine inspection/refresh work as well.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I've had a quick look through both those guides already. My only real concern was about the occasional engine failure, but understand that seeing as the car has reached 100k without this problem its unlikely to occur now?

So the work listed doesn't seem like £6k's worth? Although looking at JZM's website they don't seem to be that cheap.

I'll also have a look at Peter's service in more detail later... although £325 seems quite a lot.

Also, would anyone like to hazard a guess at the depreciation I'd be looking at when I come to sell the car in about a years time with closer to 110k on the clock - 19k?

Thanks again,
Dan.

My last car was an s2000 too. You may live near me actually if you're in the south west. :-)

You will keep it longer then a year don't worry .

Well the idea is to keep it a year, as its my house deposit (still living with the parents at the mo!) but then again, I think I said that about the S2000 three years ago!

I wish I'd be in a position to own it longer but can't see that happening.... so just gonna live the dream while I can!

Its just important to me that I get the right car at the right price so that I still have a house deposit when I do come to sell it!

Perhaps best then that you don't buy this particular car then - early 996, big miles already, overpriced by at least £2k IMHO. But there are lots of other PHers who'll pass comment on this one for you when they log in later today...

So would you say that £20k would be a more realistic price? What do others think of this?

I have seen other cars with less miles for around £20k however I have to admit I love the black with black leather which I haven't seen on others but don't really want to pay a premium for this. Also it does seem to have had a fair bit of work done on it so am hoping it would just need the basic servicing/maintenance costs over the next 12 months? Any thoughts?

Why not offer £19k now? If the guy's desperate because his new car is coming, he'll probably take it. Trade he's likely to get offered less than £18k.

Along similar lines I've been wondering what will happen as early 996's can no longer obtain Porsche warranty. The difference in my thinking to many forum naysayers is I think a high mileage but well serviced 3.4 might be a very good buy.

Ignoring the 993 debate, if the market to continues to react as is currently is we could be discussing 964 v 996 pretty soon, not on a pound for pound comparison but on the basis of what a few extra £K could buy.

To the OP, hope the purchase goes well.

Email me via my profile. A good guy in Honiton (Andy Moss) did my inspection and he came recommended by a fellow PCGB member.

I was looking for a Boxster a few months back, and I only wanted Black with Black leathers, seems a popular choice because I missed out on quite a few, I know its not the biggest thing you should look at, but for me I wanted the right colour also for resale purpose and also certain extra's. With that in mind this one fits that bill, so you might be in good stead when you come to resale.

As for mileage, personally after 100k there not much shift if you put an extra 10k because its that mental thing of going over 100k which should not be the only thing you look at when buying a Porshe.

Agree however on the price I think you should at least be looking at knocking that down by 1000 or 1250 if he/she wants to sell for the new car I think they should consider that.

Lastly history looks good and a bit of money has been spent not too long ago, so that should see you through your year (in theory), but personally I would call up some numbers in the history to check it out, and if it was bought from a dealer contact them also, see if they can tell you anything. Always a good place to checkout, find out interesting things.

PS - I want that steering wheel logo, never seen it in silver before.
