Hi all, Just wondering if anyone could shed light on this for me. The last couple of times I've left my car standing for a few days and then moved off I hear what can only described as a thud coming from the rear of the car - possibly wheels. Could this be something to do with the brakes by any chance? only a complete guess as its got me baffled?!?

it might be your rear brake shoes binding after a period of standing still.

Sounds like your rear brake pads are binding to the disks as they are applied by the handbrake. Usually happens if the disks are damp when you park up.

When I leave my car for more than a couple of days I leave the handbrake off and put it in gear.

I thought the 996 (as in the 993 & Boxster) used dedicated brake shoes for the handbrake? I remember my Boxster S doing this and it was the handbrake shoes binding, the pads aren't operated by the handbrake at all.

Silver993tt - I bow to your superior knowledge of the TT brakes! :-)

Is it like the handbrake on a Land Rover, i.e. works on the prop shaft?

I shall go and have a crawl around under my car in a minute to have a look.

So...correction....sounds like the brake 'shoes' binding! Still recommend leaving the handbrake off when leaving the car for more than a couple of days.

My Boxster S had small drums as part of the hub if I remember correctly and the shoes were in these hubs. I think it's quite a common problem if the car has been standing and there is some moisture around because the moisture gets into the drum. I used to drive the car to about 20mph and gently apply the handbrake for about 5 secs to 'clean' the shoes in the drum. Seemed to improve the situation for me.

All models with rear disc brakes and the hand brake with in the disc, the bell of the disc acts as a drum, god only knows where the idea of a Land Rover transmission brake came from.

The problem is probably just the disc pads sticking to the discs.
