Sportsfans...

I am slowly getting to the bottom of my tyre / wheel arch rubbing thing and have concluded that it may be due to the absence of spacers on my 17" Cup 1 shod 91 964. I have called 2 indies and their quotes are as follows:

1. £150 plus VAT
2. £530 plus VAT but states that only 7mm spacers will be used and longer studs in hubs need to be fitted.

Can't believe the variance in quotes.

I am now thinking of going it alone as it sounds as though bolt-on spacers will suffice. Is anyone able to impart pearls of wisdom ie what are the right spacers / shims and where can i buy them from? Anxioulsy awaiting your replies!

Can't make a comment on what's the best offset with spacers but once they're on, those few millimetres will make the look quite tasty lick

good stuff that you've found the problem but didn't you think the problem was only recently?

Have you changed front tyres? Some are wider than others...
Tyres not been replaced. Very odd. Fact that the problem has only recently started is the thing which confuses me.

Indeed I did although I can't think why the geo would be out so can only think that the prob has been there but I've never noticed previously.

Slightly off topic but I just got the 5mm spacers done at OPC on my 996 and they do make a difference to the looks and feel.

Why not go round to your nearest OPC and ask them? At least you'll get the right answer!!

I went to Design911 at the weekend and bought 2 15mm H&R spacers for £100 excl VAT.

They are really easy to fit, but make sure you use a torque wrench.

Fitting 5mm spacers to my cup 1 shod 964 has solved the wheel rub on full lock. Can retain same studs too with this thickness.

Excellent. Can you tell me where you bought them from and for how much? Cheers!

Or at least that what the OPC suggested?

They came as part of the kit.

Got my spacers from www.type-911.co.uk, and I think read on rennlist about 5mm spacers being ok with original studs. Statement came from Adrian Streather, an authority on 964's.

I'm getting really annoyed. Having spoken to two indies and now Hatfield OPC I am even more confused. Indies go for the bolt-on option - I at 7mm and the other at 5mm and OPC is into the steering rack spacers. Ironically, the OPC option (even including the £107p/h labour) would work out cheapest.

Is one option better than the other?

Sounds like the OPC are going for the official Porsche retrofit (different steering stops), which is understandable, if more expensive.
Register with the rennlist forum, and do a search on there.

go Porsche OPC - that way you have got come back on them if anything goes wrong. Having said that, I quite like the people at Porsche Hatfield.

Receptionist ain't bad either!

Can't really see what all the fuss is about, I bolted 15mm spacers onto both the front and rear of my 964 RS without any problems. Whilst the arches are rolled on the RS it also runs at least 35-40mm lower than a standard 964 C2/4.
I'd give Brian at Jasmine Porsche a ring and ask him for his views.
I'm not convinced a 5 or 7mm spacer is REALLY worth all the trouble (when you can bolt on some 15mm versions and know they'll have the correct length studs ? )

Not once in this thread has anybody mentioned the offset dimensions of the wheels to be used. Excuse me if it was mentioned in an earlier thread but the choice of spacer width MUST be considered along with the wheel offsets and widths.

Certainly 5mm spacers (more accurately - shims) are fine with the standard studs - any more though and there is insufficient thread to ensure a safe lug nut attachment.

The OPC solution of 10mm steering stops is the official line - but it only stops the wheel rub by stopping the steering moving as much with the nett result that you'll be pushed to do a 3 point turn in a farmyard!! The 5mm spacers are a better solution since they improve the look, the track and the turn-in as well as solving the problem you started with.

Depending on the source of the Cup wheels the offsets may need adjustments anyway - but without the ET figures no one can know.

Did exactly the same on my C2. As Dave says, it totally depends on the offset and width of your front wheels, but fitting 5mm spacers with genuine Cup 1s (7x17 ET55) solved my wheel arch rubbing problem. Cost £40 and 20 minutes to fit.

Thanks computa and ian. Was all set on getting the steering lock stops fitted at indie but ill now look at the wheels to determine spacer size. i had a quick look but could not find the offset near the valve (perhaps my wheels are not OEM). i guess i would have to take it off to find out?
