I'm having a bad week!!...dont ask i'd only depress you.

Anyway, just to top things off, the sim tray on my PCM module wont lock back in. I'm led to beleive that there is a small plastic latch on the tray which commonly breaks. I'm also told that it isnt a replacement item and the whole PCM2 unit needs to be replaced (at frightening cost).

Is this true?
Has anyone else had the problem and found a fix for it?

And all this because Orange will only provide a duplicate sim to business customers and not mere residential customers. Grrrr!!

Thanks for the info...very helpful, if my other enquiries fall through, ill give them a casll.

Ive been digging around myself and found a supplier for the part if anyone fancies fitting one themselves. It doesnt look that hard.

The suppliers are
AEL Ltd
Tel 0121 5226652
Part No. 1339.249
Cost £20 +vat

Ive ordered a couple this morning but will take about 3 weeks to arrive.

There is a tutorial on how to fit it here.

you can put the sim in a tray in the module under the seat as well, can't help you on how it's done but you have to undo the seat mounts to get at the box the opc did it foc , so cant be to much work.

ooh, i wasnt aware of that. I suppose that if you had a dedicated card, it would be a good idea.
Incidentley, I had a new phone module fitted about a month ago, and apparently its a later version as they needed to fit a conversion lead for the aerial.

The good news is that this phone will work with all the sim cards ive tried, including the dreaded Orange sim.

Ive been in touch with Orange today and moaned at the fact that I broke my phone tray because they wont supply a second sim and was put through to a very helpful man on the business side who has managed to cook up a business account for me. Once it goes through I will finally get my duplicate card.

£30 connection fee and £3 per month for the facility.

Just to finish off,

My Sim Card tray (well 2 of em actually) turned up this morning and I decided to grit my teeth and get on with it.

Once I got the PCM unit out, which was the hardest bit due to the stupid release thingys, the rest was fairly straightforward.

Its all a bit fiddley and for someone who is not used to stripping electronics down, probably a bit daunting, but if you follow the tutorial on this thread, its not at all difficult. It should take about 30 minutes to complete. I spent a little longer as I wanted to address another problem which also seems fairly common on PCM2 units.

This problem being, a slight ticking noise coming from the CD drive. You will know if youve got it because it is just loud enough to be annoying. I finally narrowed it down to the top bearing on the CD drive. Its very simple to fix as well. If anyone fancies a go, this is what to do.

While the top cover of the PCM2 unit is off, remove the 4 screws holding the CD unit to the case lid. You will then be able to see the top bearing which is a white nylon disc, held down by a copper coloured leaf spring. The spring is in turn, held down by a small screw which is the key to the fix.

It appears that as the nylon disc wears slightly on its upper surface, the disc starts to catch on the underside of the leaf spring. All that is needed is to slacken the screw by about half a turn and the noise will dissapear.

The easiest way of checking is to make sure that before you remove the PCM2 unit, have an old CD in it (one that may get scratched) so that when you take the CD unit out, you can rotate the disc by hand to reproduce the ticking noise and then adjust the bearing till it stops. You can adjust the screw too much, and the noise will come back, so its really a matter of suck it and see, as to how much adjustment is needed on the screw.

hope this helps someone.

P.S
I finally persuaded Orange to give me a same number sim and after getting it set up correctly, I can now leave my normal mobile phone turned on and when I fire the car up and the carphone initialises, all calls go to the car. Again, when I turn the ignition off, all calls are rerouted to my hand mobile. you can even make simultaneous calls on the carphone and the hand mobile as if they are totally independent.

Nice one Orange.

I have a similar issue.

The SIM tray seems to have lost its "spring, and no long slides out or clips back in place. Also, with a SIM card in it doesnt recognise the card (Voda).

Any assistance would be most welcome.

both problems are caused by the same thing. There is a small pin inside the tray, which breaks off.
The pin not only toggles the latch but also operates a tiny switch to signal when a card has been inserted. The pin is minute and extremely hard to fix, so its best to get a new tray from the address higher up the thread.

I would suggest that if you dont fancy the idea of stripping the unit yourself, that you take it to a local Audio/TV repair place with the new part and get them to fit it for you.

Did you have any joy with this?

I think I may have found one on ebay but it's around £60 with postage.

Anyone else know where these can be bought?

Thanks.

I'll give them a try. I just want the part as I want to fix it myself.
