Is there a non-standard "sport" version that enhances the sound rather than emulating a 1982 Nova with a drilled exhaust?

Not made by Porsche,,but Techart, cargraphics,Europipe to name a few can supply one,,,they normally start at £3000+ and utilise better flowing 100 cell cats which don't last that long (compared to regular cats).
Usual spurious 15-25 bhp improvement claims.

You know the score....For the regular aspirated 996 model Porsche can supply a sports exhaust for approx £1500...Interesting enough they do not claim any increase in performance at all just a different sound.

A sports exhaust will make a difference to a turbo. The standard 996tt exhaust is pants, get rid of it. However, that is secondary to the cats, they do the majority of the damage. Personally I would just replace the cats with a bypass, if not, get sport cats. I believe you will see a good 25 bhp (from experience with my car). I think a forum member called Lee went to G-force-motorsport.co.uk for exhaust and filter..... He posted some pretty good results. Do a search on the forum, i'm sure the post will turn up.

As far as make is concerned, I believe most of the after market guys are rebadged FVD.de products. I also recall that G-force are now the UK/European distributor. For more info I would have a look on rennlist.com. There are some serious tuning monkeys posting regular mouth watering tails of performance modifications.....

If you are serious about this go to the www.rennlist.com 996TT forum,,,the guys on there change sports exhaust' like we change toothbrushes.
Europipe seems to be the fitment of choice.
Also consider potential voiding warranty with Porsche UK.

Car will be registered in the IOM so I don't even legally need the cats!

Bypass looks like a good first step........

(....after I have purchased the car of course!)
