Hello there,
I'm fairly new to posting on these forums, (long time lurker, short time poster..) and just had a question for you all.

My dad used to be heavily involved with the PCGB, and arranged all the Cadwell track days that used to happen years ago. Since moving away from mum and dads house 7 years ago, i feel i am out of the loop when it comes to knowledge about Porsche these days.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, i'm looking to get my first 911 sometime early next year, so i'm just looking about and getting to know the market at the moment.

After all this rambling, my question is this, how come i cant find ANY Guards red 996s?? I love the 996 shape, and dad used to have a silver turbo, but i think it really suits red. I saw a couple of GT3's in (Zanzibar?) Red, but no Carrera 2s, which all seem to be silver...

I'm probably asking a daft question and they never made red ones or something, its just i see loads of Yellow ones, which are surely far less desirable than traditional Guards Red?

Anyway, any advice would be much apreciated.
Thanks and cheerio for now

Well there's one on my drive......

I'm with you and think Red looks great on a 996 - gives it a presence.

Death before silver.

Red was a very unpopular colour on the 996, hence you not finding many. Makes it harder to sell and hence reduces the values somewhat, which is to your benefit when buying (but be aware it'll take longer to sell on again).

Thanks for the replies guys,

I've managed to find 1 car on Autotrader, none on piston heads, and none on E-Bay!! It's crazy, its by far the best colour IMO..

glad to know that they are out there, but i just find it really odd that there seem to be so many Yellow ones (which stand out too much for me!)

I'm surprised to hear that the Red ones will sell for less, but i suppose thats good news for me as a buyer!!!

A red 996 C2 with a GT3 kit and black interior is what i'm after, but then from reading threads on here it may be best for me to buy one without the kit on
and put it on myself... (I know lots of people on here aren't fans of this but i really like it)

A friend of mine is probably looking to sell his low mileage Zanzibar GT3 kitted car - 2000 X C2 manual, just 29,000 miles. He had wanted a low mileage guards red and couldn't find one. He doesn't use it a lot (but only the road) and has now bought a racing car (Sports 2000 single seater), hence the probable sale.

Let me know if you want to know more.

It is depressing to see that the vast majority seem to be either silver or black. Have a look on the Porsche search engine for used cars at the OPC's and they seem to dominate. Silver is easy to keep looking clean but it's so damn boring. If you buy a sports car why not go for a proper colour. My 964 C2 was guards red and I won the kent region concours with it in 1999 for the specific class into which it was enetered. Red responds well to a decent polishing regime and gives the most satisfying results.

I wonder if the Germans have cornered the market in silver paint because it's the one that the saleforce likes to promote whether its Porsche, BMW, MERC or AUDI! Why would anyone buy such a nice car in Battleship grey or Bismark Silver?

Loud colours are on their way back into fashion.

Orange, viper green, white etc is what you see on the magazines.

Add to guards red and speed yellow.

sort of relating to the preceding post...
bright colours have only really 'come back in' recently. the only bright colours you got in the late 90s were seats...

..plus more specifically i think a lot of (non-gt3) buyers were still haunted by the BBC 1980s conspicuous consumption footage of the guy with the giant mobile, loads of guards sc/3.2s, and a duran duran soundtrack...!

it was best not to be 'the 'twat' with the bright red porsh' (innit).

i don't know if it's because when you do see a guards 996 it's because it's usually a mk1 gt3 that makes you think it looks good..but it certainly does....!

personally think pork looks great in colours with volume switches.
Cannot be doing with subtle shades of silver, my 993 C4S was silver and it was a tad understated for my likes, hence an 80's White 930 cab is lurking in me garage, can't get much more in your face than that!

I love guards red in just about any porka, the 996 turbo looks great in red. I find it odd that people buy sports cars in such dull and drab colours these days.

I agree, it all adds to the sense of occasion when you fire the engine up on a Saturday morning.

Anyway, they look good in all colours.

Funny, but I find that kind of inverted snobbery a funny thing. It
sort of suggests more people would secretly like to buy a red one, but are worried about what other people might think or say. I know you didn't mean that way, by the way.

Anyhow, we should all buy the colours we want and be done with it.
