just topped up my thirsty boxster s with some mobil 1 (£25 for 4ltr) and saw in costco that magnatec is half the price? Is this oil any good? does anyone use it?

I use it in my turbo on the recommendation of JZ Machtech who look after it for me. They certainly seem to know their stuff so it can't be too bad.

All I can tell you is the engine hasn't blown up so far (reaching for a piece of wood to touch now!)

if it is good you can get 4ltrs from costco for £12.50.

Bargain!

I use Magnatec in my TVR with a Rover V8 lump (really old technology - runs at low pressure, and known to have camshaft lube probs at startup), but Mobil 1 in '81 SC.

I can't see the point in skimping on a modern engine.

so you think mobil 1 is the better choice of oil then?

Danny,

When I had an '86 3.2, my OPC told me not to use Mobil 1 as it was too thin.

(I'm sure it's the right oil for modern Porsches though.)

Yip mobil 1 is a bit too thin for a SC, it will tend to find leaks through gaskets, joints & seals that thicker oils willl not.

Also with the amount of oil an aircooled 911 needs at oil change time its unecessarly expensive too. Magnatec or one of the other quality semi synthetics will be fine for it.

My 1981 3.0 SC had slight oil leaks, which didn't get worse when I put Mobil 1 in. The previous owner used another synthetic oil, not sure which brand.

i'm on synth in mine at the moment Danny, but i think it might benefit from a thicker oil, they say these thin tend to find all the leaks, BTW am getting mine back after a 5WEEK break, it was parked up in a hanger for 3 weeks before they even looked at it, and in that time had actually dumped a square metre of oil on his nice floor, the last oil change had not renewed the sealing washer under the oil tank in rear wing they cost about 10P

Ouch - that sounds like it will need some attention. You might improve the situation with thicker oil, but if it is leaking that badly I at least find out where from and think about fixing it (hopefully nothing major)
